Perfect for that "jump" from non-reader to reader November 30, 2007 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
On the advice of a teacher I bought these for my son when he became interested in reading signs but still preferred to be read to and claimed he couldn't read. We would read them together: him a line, me a line. The characters and stories are very engaging, for both young and old, so one doesn't tire of them. Then after a couple of weeks of this, one day he picked up the book and read us a whole page, and within a week a whole story. Months later, they still remain his first choice to read to himself, and we have lots of fun laughing over the situations that Frog and Toad get into and out of, as they relate very well to a child's normal experiences (ice cream melting too fast, not wanting to get up in the morning) and form excellent non-moralistic talking points about situations, solutions and behaviour in general. I am now about to buy some more of the Arnold Lobel books and several parents at the school have borrowed from us, then bought their own, copies. There are some Americanisms in the books, but they don't get in the way of a story that British children can understand and come to love.
Classic stuff August 5, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
We read these to and with our daughter when she was much smaller. The time when frog had to write a list of things to do and started it with 'write a list' is part of a shared family joke now! Wonderful books which bring adult and child onto a rare equal footing as the humour and pathos of the little stories unfold. Am now buying for my nephew so that I can enjoy them again :)
Arnold Lobel - hero March 5, 2007 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
How does he do it? The Frog and Toad tales are classics. Arnold Lobel's stories of the the two chums Frog and Toad have a fable-like quality. But there is no moral tone here - the two amphibians cope with life's small difficulties - a messy house, lack of willpower, a lost button - with each other's help, and a few failures as well as lots of success. The illustrations, like the text, are full of charm and wit. And the text is just right for young readers, say 6 or 7 years old, to cope with. Perfect!

This is a wryly amusing book for the parent to read to the child, or for the child to read themselves. The style of understated humour makes it all the more hilarious. Neurosis for children - perfect.
