4 out of 5 stars A solid if not spectacular effort   January 5, 2008

Danik's World seeks independence from the Imperium and the Vostroyan Firstborn is assigned to bring them back into the fold. Complicating matters is that a large force of Orks is also present making life difficult for the Imperial forces. When Captain Sebastev and his company get cut off behind enemy lines with the rest of his regiment destroyed, the Firstborn must make it back to friendly territory as quickly as possible with a valuable package that could change the course of the war.

Rebel Winter is well written and entertaining enough but it does lack something to make it stand out above the crowed of other 40K novels. The plot is somewhat basic and predictable, and does lack somewhat in excitement. This is not to say that this is a bad book and there is enough in it to keep any 40K fan interested. This is Steve Parkers first Warhammer 40,000 novel and it does show potential if he could up the excitement level somewhat.

4 out of 5 stars Mankinds war   September 18, 2007

A Warhammer 40k novel that follows the Vostroyan Firstborn and in particular the exploits of Captain Sebastev known to his men as "the Pit Dog" for his combat abilities as well as his sheer determination to follow orders to the letter. Facing a hard battle against not only traitors to the Emperor but also mankinds oldest enemy (Orks) we have a first novel from an author who really does show a lot of promise. The death toll on both sides is high and the price that mankind pays for the emperor and service to the planets under his rule is the only acceptable coin. Highly explosive, fast paced and a tale that will keep you guessing right to the end about the survivability of the characters concerned. Whilst a number of authors prefer to stick to the established Marines, here we have the real heroes of the Imperium, the unaugmented men who fight because its their duty for honour and the love of those back home on their own world. For a first novel Steve has shown remarkable talent in giving the reader what they want, mankind fighting for survival with pyrhic victories, the Emperors will.
