RAW explained using some stunning images. October 4, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It is always difficult to give credence to any book about photography where the quality of the published pictures is suspect. The digital revolution as far as cameras are concerned have led those of us who were previously successful with film format into a whole new area of learning. Consequently, there are books and tutorial DVDs which seek to assist in that process of education. Those products generally fall into the 3 broad categories of Good, Not so good, and Abysmal.
In this case, however, we have an exception. This is a product which falls into the category of Excellent!
Quite seriously, this man knows his stuff, is able to take some pretty amazing photographs and also quite able to put his skills into book form so that we who wish to learn may do so.
His photography is of the highest calibre and, whilst I did not buy the book to look at his pictures - but, instead, purchased it in order to learn about RAW, I would have found it very difficult to accept anything written by someone who was not able to practise what they preach.
If you are at the stage where you also need to understand RAW, this is the book for you. It will not disappoint.

Poor Raw June 13, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I read this book in about 4 hours. When I say 'read', I actually mean that I spent 4 hours ingesting Andy Rouse's self indulgent Wildlife portfolio. Andy manages to weave a woeful plug of his own work into every piece of advice on offer. Of all the pages, at least 50% of them are photo's. Andy's photo's, obviously. the text is large and each Chapter begins with a double page spread stating 'CHAPTER 3!!!! How to promote your own work in every way possible whilst camouflaging it in a self-help disguise'. As you can tell, I wasnt impressed. It tells you what to do, but very little on how to do it! for example..ensure you manage your files. back up your data. buy Photoshop CS3. It also includes some shamful plugs for companies who probably paid for this book to be produced, reminiscent of Wayne's World 2. There is nothing in this book that you couldn't source in half an hours web hunting. Save your money and buy a new SD card or something. Your time would be better spent shooting than reading this book.
Good but not great May 1, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
The book is nicely written, has fine images. It should only be targeted to inexperienced photographers and for those new to digital. Chapters that discuss RAW are not extensive and the book is actually a work-flow tutorial. Overall I was disappointed and felt that the title was bigger than the contents.
A really worthwhile book on the basic concepts of RAW photography together with lots of good practical advice March 18, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I suppose that you could say that a technical manual is successful if it tells you things you didn't know and changes the way that you do things. This book did precisely that for me. It is well laid out, thoughtful with lots of good photographic examples which are clearly explained to illustrate many of the points the book makes.
This book is to be recommended regardless of which software you use. It explains many of the points which are merely "assumed" and not covered by the specific software manuals. Use this in conjunction with your Lightroom/Picassa/IView/WhatHaveYou software manual and you won't need anything else. You will be glad that you read this one first
A bit lightweight for an experienced Digital Photographer January 13, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Based on other reviews I was expecting a bit more from this book. I found that most of it went over familiar ground for a seasoned digital photographer. That's not to say that I didn't learn anything from the book, there were one or two nuggets of useful information that I stumbled across.....was just expecting a few more advanced techniques when shooting with RAW. Great for beginners and like so many photography books, not so good if you have a bit more experience.
