Very Good, but not as promised September 28, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Very Nice DVD's !! For Every Friend of Big Cats.
But I wonder, why they have written running time of 300 minutes (see amazon) or 250 Minutes (on the DvD's Backside-Cover). Fact it is, that the real running time is only 220 minutes. So,where are the others 80 / 30 Minutes going?
DVD 1 has 3 Chapter,each 22 Minutes = 66 Minutes DVD 2 has 3 Chapter,each 22 Minutes = 66 Minutes DVD 3 has 2 Chapter,each 22 Minutes = 44 Minutes DVD 4 has 2 Chapter,each 22 Minutes = 44 Minutes TOTAL running Time is 220 Minutes.
And also very sad is, that the Pictures/Photos on the Cover of the DVD shows the Lion Man (Craig Bush) with a big adult male White Lion. But on all 4 DVD's, you CAN'T see an adult Male white Lion. Where is this Male White Lion showing?
Just wondering. Male White Lions are my all-time favorite Big Cats. That's one of the Reasons,i have buy this DVD. But i'm missing this One.
Amazing guy, amazing animals April 9, 2008 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
I caught this as a series whilst out in New Zealand for a year where it was a big ratings hit. I loved it and as a consequence have both this series and series 2 on DVD (my brother, who lives in NZ, kindly sent them to me as birthday presents when they were issued as DVDs back in 2004/5).
I don't know how this UK version will differ but the series is a rollercoaster of emotions and essential family viewing. I loved it and still watch it off and on, hoping for a series 3 so I can catch up with how the cats are doing.
Craig is your typical NZ guy with an unbelievable knack of understanding his big cats which are part of his extended family. Craig owns a zoo which is involved in important conservation work but he's also a very skilled animal handler and some of his hand reared cats are film and advertising stars (one lion was to be used as the template for Aslan from the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe although I think that's in series 2 - can't quite remember).
Lionman is infinitely better than Ben's Zoo which was shown on UK TV recently as Craig has far more personality, a greater understanding of the conservation work he's doing having been involved with big cats from an early age, plus an unspoken bond with his big cat family. Lionman is a series with a big heart and I'd recommend it wholeheartedly. Like Attenborough, Craig has a genuine love of his subject which is immediately visible to those watching. Watch out for the moments when he takes his lions "walkies" on the beach. If I have any quibbles with my versions it's that, as it was made for commercial TV, it has a narrative update where the programme would have recommenced after the breaks that is slightly off putting but not much plus you get the introduction and end credits for each programme even when you say "play all" but I can live with both those because the series is fantastic.
Buy it, watch it, enjoy it.
