Amazon.co.uk Review
Everyone knows the fate of Anne Boleyn, but not many know the story of her rise to majesty and the part played by her rival and sister, Mary, who was Henry's mistress and mother to two of his bastard children before the dazzling older Boleyn girl even caught his eye. Philippa Gregory, whose own role as the Queen of historical romance grows more secure with each new novel, has surpassed her self with this epic tale of lust, jealousy and betrayal. The Other Boleyn Girl charts the lives of both Boleyns--each in their turn "the other Boleyn Girl"--and their fiercely ambitious, conniving family who used the girls as pawns to advance their own positions at the court of Henry VIII. At 13, Mary is little more than a child when she is presented to Henry, ordered by her scheming family to serve her King and country by opening her legs whenever commanded, or doing anything else the great monarch desires. And while his loins are satisfied, life at court is sweet for the unofficial Queen and her pushy coterie. Inevitably though, the King's eyes soon begin to wander and Mary is overlooked, helpless to do anything but aid her family's plot to advance their fortunes, replace her with Anne and give Henry the greatest gift of all: a son and heir.

So good a job has Ms Gregory done at portraying the Boleyns and Howards as selfish, scheming, treacherous manipulators however, that it becomes increasingly hard to feel empathy for any of them. While Mary is merely hapless, Anne is the most ruthless of them all, so that instead of feeling cheated by knowing the outcome of her story, it only serves to help digest her unpalatable rise. Such a gruesome destiny was never more deserved. Ms Gregory has worked hard at researching her historical references. Daily life at court is described in fascinating detail--from the relentless leisure pursuits, masques and banquets laid on for the easily bored King to the complex hierarchies and machinations of the courtiers. However, the fall of Queen Katherine of Aragon and her only child, the Princess Mary, and the politics of the competing European courts and the break with Rome are seen only as a backdrop to the bawdy goings-on of the Boleyns and their fateful race for the crown. --Carey Green

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!   September 23, 2008
This book was recommened to me by friends, and I am so glad that I took their advice and read this. It is one of my favourite books of all time. I just loved it so much, I found it really interesting to see the story unfold from the perspective from Annes sister, and experience the life of the court through her eyes. Luckily I read this book before I saw the movie otherwise I never would have bothered with it. The history might not be 100% accurate but its so well written and enjoyable that I didn't care and just enjoyed the novel at face value. Highly recommended!!

5 out of 5 stars Well hooked!   September 22, 2008
The Other Boleyn Girl was my first introduction to Philippa Gregory's writing and subsequently had me hooked! As a result of her astonishing ability to provide the reader with a vivid and rich account based on fact, with exciting, intense charactors and a plot already provided for by history, Gregory allows her readers to indulge themselves in the exciting world of intrige, danger and passion of King Henry's court from a perspective not before addressed. While no doubt a fair amount of poetic licence has been used throughout, the end result is a top rate read! Not all of Gregory's other novels rate so highly for me, but THIS one was terrific!

1 out of 5 stars historically incorrect   September 19, 2008

It does annoy me that Phillipa Gregory and her like prefer to take the sensationalist track to sell their book rather than sticking to the truth. Sadly, the truth of what happened in regard to Anne Boleyn is far more fascinating than the 'claptrap' served up by this author. I won't be bothering with anymore of her books as I really do prefer fact to fiction!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!   September 16, 2008
I absolutely loved this book, having been convinced that I wouldn't. It's really well written, the story is fantastic, and knowing the eventual outcome just makes it more exciting. It really brings the court of Henry VIII to life, and it's historically accurate enough for my needs in a page turner! I certainly know a lot more about it now than I did. I am now reading every other book she has written, as I loved it so much.

5 out of 5 stars A different side to a well known story   September 15, 2008
I picked this up without knowing anything about the author and I hadn't heard about the film. Being Irish I was never very interested in the English kings and queens but this book looked different and interesting and it was. It also made me interested in this period and looked up a little history because of it.

For those that say it is inaccurate, first I don't know a lot about this time. Philippa Gregory is a historian and has some good arguments on the parts people object to, like which sister was oldest. But this is a novel I doubt she would want people to take it so seriously, it's interesting to read and it can spark interest in people to learn history, what's so wrong with that.
