Favorite so far July 18, 2006 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is one of the first three of Fforde's books I have read and my favorite by far.
I felt that the story was in the realm of possibility - the hero wasn't Prince Charming, but yet you still wanted he and our heroine to get together in the end.
A fun, light read, definitely recommended!
Great book can't wait for more March 25, 2004 15 out of 17 found this review helpful
I originaly discovered Katie Fforde after buying Highland Fling and reading it in one go. I couldn't wait to read more. Katie Fford writes characters that are both lovable and belivable, they suffer their trials and tribulations just like everyone else. Her heroines are normal they have lumps and bumps and aren't all under the age of 30.Her hero's are human and come with baggage in this case a stately home and a dodgey car.I hope that if she ever sells a novel to Hollywood they won't destroy it like they did with The Beach and Animal Attraction. Stately Pursuits is a wonderfull feel good novel and I heartly recomended it to anyone that like a bit of old fashioned romance with plenty of humour
Toe Curlingly Awful January 13, 2004 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
This book is truly dreadful! I can only assume that before getting a mainstream publisher, Ms Fforde wrote for Mills & Boon, because this book is a cardboard cut-out in their style. The characters are cliched, their actions and dialogue is laughable, while the plot is as holey as Swiss cheese. I was groaning with horror the whole way through - only a morbid desire to see how bad it could get made me read to the end. Just terrible, if it was possible to give it zero stars I would have done - don't waste your money on it.
Pure escapism May 16, 2003 Yet another brillient book by Katie Fforde. As ever her heroines are likable, but somehow always manage to get into such scrapes only to be rescued by the gruff, brooding hero. Such fun and pure escapism. Can't wait for more books.
Not Great...But Not Terrible August 20, 2001 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
I enjoyed this book although I found it very predictable (in a cozy sort of way). Hetty, Peter, Phyllis, and Connor were all engaging characters, and the story was fun. It reminded me a bit of Pride and Prejudice (the chemistry between the leads) but, sadly, without any of the depth of P&P. But Stately Pursuits is romantic and features a lovely old house, the likes of which we obviously don't have here in the States. The reader from Hampshire has me wondering about the truth of English country life, as she says that Stately Pursuits bears no resemblance to the real thing!
