Absolutely brilliant! August 28, 2008 After reading the reviews I thought let me give it a try. My three year old and 23mth old boys both love it! They love the rhymes and the different types of dogs. My three yr old can even tell you the next rhyming word after only a wk reading the stories to them. Its a bed-time treat. I would reccomend it to anyone with babies and toddlers. Its absolutely adorable! I plan to purchase more from this series for my kids later on.
A classic August 11, 2008 Having moved to NZ from the UK - everyone knows Hairy Maclary from Donaldon's Dairy - but that wasn't the case in Britain. My one year old adores the series - particulary Scarface Claw and Slinky Malinky. My four year old gets much from the stories and recites them in the car - much to the delight of her younger sister! Wonderful illutrations and perfect prose. Ka Pai!
These books are absolutely magic August 9, 2008 Lynley Dodd certainly knows how to write books for children... I bought Slinky Malinki first, and my daughter loved that book from when she was 5 months old. I learned to recite it, in the car, at home, wherever, and she would always quieten down and listen... it became a good substitue for a dummy. All I had to say was 'Slinky Malinki' and all was good in her world!
My daughter is now 2 and we've had this Hairy Maclary set of books for a few months now and she adores them. She cannot go to bed without being read at least 3 of them... she evens knows when to join in with a big 'WOOF' (scarface claw). Her favourites are Rumpus at the Vets and Showbusiness. I prefer the structure of the rhyming in those two.. it flows better than the other ones - although Slinki Malinki is still the creme de la creme. The language and vocabulary in that book are out of this world. Exciting, funny, entertaining, educational and a joy to read.. what more could you ask for from an author?
Stopped us going mad May 24, 2008 My 10 month old has this which we read to him in bits and the board book version of the first story, Hairy Maclary from Donaldsons Dairy. He squeals when we get it out of the bookshelf and he always gets his board book version (which lives in his toy box) out and opens it onto the page which introduces 'Scarface Claw' the cat.
Good for recurring characters, great rhyming and use of words. Entertaining for us too.
PS A dairy is a New Zealand corner store.
Excellent book choice for younger readers February 29, 2008 I have just bought this book for my 3 year old following the recommendations on this site and he absolutely loves it! I cannot recommend it enough - every night he begs for more stories from Hairy Maclary that I am going to buy even more books from this author.
The stories are exciting and fast paced and introduce some fun characters like Muffin Mclay and Scarface Claw. I have to aqdmit I was slightly sceptical about whether my son would like these but he loves them and I appreciated the reviews made by other people as it made me buy the book in the first place.
