2 out of 5 stars Promising start that doesn't measure up.   August 5, 2005

I bought this book expecting advice on improving fine motor skills along with a few activities, however the book does not contain any actual advice or practical exercises to do.

It contains 14 mazes which it suggests you copy and place in plastic pockets (or laminate) and ask children to trace round. I really like these mazes as they are all on different themes eg space, rabbits, trains etc and think the children I work with will improve their skills by using them.

The rest of the book is an alphabet pop-up book which you make up by copying letters (capital and lower case) and colouring three pictures for each sound. The book then gives you instructions to follow to make the pop up book.

While I think the pop-up book would be fun to make, it rushes children with poor motor control onto using capital letters and focussing on reading skills rather than fine motor.

The first half of the book will be useful, the second half I don't think I'll ever use.
