1 out of 5 stars Incorrect information   January 8, 2008

I was absolutely horrified to read the author suggests feeding up for hibernation of a tortoise. This is the very thing that killed so many of our pet shop tortoises back in the fifties to the eighties. A tortoises stomach needs to be completely empty prior to hibernating to ensure food cannot ferment and kill it. I hope that not too many people have taken this advice!

This book covers all topics about keeping a tortoise or turtle as a pet. Basis information how torts and turtles behave and live is given to better understand tortoises' ecology. Then it is described how to select a healthy tort, how to house it with all the necessary equipment. Much information is availalbe about husbandry, breeding, health. To end there is an extensive species description described with all the necessary basic information of the described tortoises and turtles.

It is a very good book for older children who can take responsibility to take care of a tortoise or turtle as a pet.
