Tasso's epic is one of the great works of the Renaissance and tells the story of the First Crusade. No one should be put off by that subject; the Muslims provide many of the heroes and just about all of the beautiful and active women who create so much of the plot.
The translation is in verse, which I think you need in order to feel what the original is like, and reads very nicely in contemporary English. The notes are very good as well; my favourites are the extracts from Galileo's letters in which he critiques the poem.
