In the new digital era where photographs in the media are often retouched and manipulated, it's refreshing to see a set of photographs where the quality of equipment, choice of subject, and reproduction are both natural and top notch.

The authors have patiently selected their material, seasons and weather to take some magnificient pictures. The book itself is far more than the average coffee table book, the photographic material, the historical and geographical notes make this a perfect reminder of England's rich cultural heritage. The natural and man-made beauty should inspire every reader to go forth and explore our green and pleasant land.

I found this book by chance and it has some of the best aerial photography of England I have seen. The landscapes and man-made features are shown throughout the seasons during sunshine and snow. The camera used is a medium format Hasselblad and the square format of the book is perfect for the photographs. Even better, each picture has a map reference and grid reference so you can find the locations easily. The product of three hundred hours of flying it is a delight to browse and a true labour of love showing the English landscape at its best.

5 out of 5 stars Never mind the quality - feel the width and breath of the UK   March 8, 2005

You know "quality" the moment you see it, don't you? And the instant you open this book on any page, you recognise the very highest quality not only in the photographs (not an appropriate term really - more revealing portrait than mere photos), but also in the accompanying historical and contextual explanatory words with each plate. All presented in sumptuous warm colours and very well laid out.

It's a book that you simply can't put down because the history of the UK unfolds before your eyes. The aerial views give you an entirely new dimension and reveal the true scope and nature of the landscape around us, with its history past and present.

A sumptuous book for browsing, learning and wondering at the beauty of the United Kingdom in front of a warm fire with a nice cup of tea.

It's even great value for any visitor to the UK - each photo is accompanied by its exact location (including OS map reference) enabling you plan your tour with great precision. But be warned you're likely to need to stay in the UK a long time!

Just buy it - it's that good!
