Comments: 1987 softbacked book, approx 9.75" x 7". Cover has light edgwear, light surface wear on back, and light wear bottom of spine, pages a little darkened on edges but overall very good clean copy. 192 pages. Elizabeth Thompson, later Lady Butler, was a phenomenon of 19th century British art. though she herself never witnessed war at first hand, her battle scenes won her a popularity and critical success which no other British woman painter has ever approached. This catalogue was the first large scale survey of her career and pays special attention to the reception of Butlers pictures in her heyday in the 1870's, and also looks at work painted many years after her reputation had begun to fade which had never before been shown in public.
