Customer Reviews:
spiritual indeed April 25, 2008 I have many popular CDs by John Denver, however I have an LP "Whose garden was this", which I have been trying to track down in CD format. I was delighted to find several tracks from the LP as bonus tracks on this CD. On listening to "Spirit" I was moved by the sincerity of the songs and the gentle spiritual nature of the whole CD. My particular favourite is "Old Folks" a prayer and poem to those who are facing the end of their lives - beautiful.
From vinyl to CD January 20, 2006 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I've mostly stopped playing vinyl but when I put this album on I fell in love all over again, especially with 'In the Grand Way' and 'Wings to Fly Us Home' tracks. Very spiritual and uplifting without being heavy. Nothing for it, I bought the CD to keep the album accessible. I think it was close to the best work John Denver ever did, and I'm sad that his music has been pigeon-holed and doesn't get the recognition it rightly deserves. I wouldn't say his music is strictly Country and Western or just Country come to that. Spirit is a mix of styles, tones and moods and I like it all the more for that. If you only buy one John Denver album, this is the one to buy.Had to order from the US as an import (didn't know it was rare and hard to source in the UK)and the CD has bonus tracks of some of his other works which I haven't heard before.
John Denver album a little more contemplative and country July 6, 2004 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
John Denver had a pretty good year in 1975 with the release of the live album "An Evening With John Denver," "Rocky Mountain Christmas" for the holidays, and the popular "Windsong" album. "Spirit," a 1976 release, is a second level John Denver album but one of the better ones and an album often overlooked by those expanding their music collection beyond the greatest hits albums. This is a quieter album offering contemplative ballads such as "Like a Sad Song" and "In the Grand Way," which were always one of Denver's strengths as a songwriter. "Spirit" is a bit more country than you usually find on a John Denver album (e.g., "Baby, You Look Good to Me Tonight"), including covers of some older country songs that a lot of listeners might not recognize as such (e.g., "San Antonio Rose"). This CD reissue of "Spirit" offers up a quartet of bonus tracks, including one original song by Denver, "The Game Is Over," and a surprising couple of Lennon & McCartney songs, "Eleanor Rigby" and "Golden Slumbers," the latter as part of a medley. Only those who really listened to John Denver know that he did several covers of songs by Paul McCartney, the best of which is still "Junk." Adding these treats to the end of "Spirit" makes it a prime choice for anyone who enjoys Denver's music and wants to get beyond the basics.
