5 out of 5 stars A good read   July 17, 2008
From the very begining of this book I was hooked and I really loved it. However, I was slightly disappointed with the ending as I felt it was rushed. Would any one else agree with this? I would recommend it to others and am looking forward to reading Kate Morton's next book.

4 out of 5 stars A lovely, gently mysterious read   July 10, 2008

A lovely and very enjoyable read, the sort of book it's nice to curl up on the sofa with for a few hours undisturbed on a rainy day and just immerse yourself in the mystery of the secret held by some of those at the old house called Riverton. We see the workings of an lavish home of a rich family prior to, during and after the First World War, both from the point of view of the owners, most importantly the sisters Hannah and Emmeline, and what goes on below stairs, primarily through the eyes of the main character Grace, who works as a servant at Riverton as her mother did before her.

Don't be put off as I was initially by the length, the story pans out well and the characters are interesting enough to engage the reader and the length is then not an issue, in fact I found myself thinking I could have enjoyed reading on even more. Very enjoyable, intelligent but not terribly demanding at all. Looking forward to reading her new novel 'The Forgotten Garden' next.

3 out of 5 stars slow going   July 9, 2008

Like some of the other reviewers I have to agree that the book started off with good intentions but about half way through became stale, the secret and the mystery surrounding the book was a good idea, but it had a predictable disappointing ending. However all in all it was a pleasant read and it didnt put me off reading this authors second book, which in my view gives the reader everyhing this book didnt deliver.

5 out of 5 stars Totally compelling - "A secret that can last a lifetime"   July 6, 2008

I bought this book on a dreary Sunday afternoon. You know how it is... desperate for a good read but not quite knowing what to buy. As I picked this book from the shelf I imagined it to be sitting months later, half read and abandoned along with countless others that had not quite managed to grab my attention longer than the first chapter. I couldn't have been more wrong.

Riverton Manor. A grand English country house. Home to Hannah and Emmiline Hartford. Theirs a life of privilage, with all its finery and glittering society parties. Mystery and secrets. Love, loss and tragedy.
Here, hidden beneath the layers of time the ghosts of old memories are stirred.

Their story is told by Grace Bradley. One time housemaid at Riverton. As the tale unfolds a secret is about to emerge, something forgotten in the midsts of time but not as it seems by Grace...

There is just something in the way its written. I couldn't put it down and was disappointed once I'd finished it. Realizing there was nothing more to learn about the lives of Hannah, Emm and Grace.

A book which will stay with you long after it has been returned once more to the shelf!

I could not put this book down. It was both easy to read and very interesting.

I loved Grace, you understand to her. That you have a serect that can't be find out about for love or money.

This a much read book.
