1 out of 5 stars Gave up   August 27, 2008

I got to page 100 or so, and gave up.
Like so many other reviewers, I was impressed by the professional reviews, and now feel disappointed - in fact, I feel cheated.

I suppose it is not really fair to review a book without having finished it. However, it really was so dull that I was not prepared to waste any more time on it.

I do not get much time for reading, so perhaps someone more widely - read can explain to me:

Why, tucked away at the end(page 703) there is a laudatory review/summary of the book ("This is a stunning novel...");

Why it contains some 'Themed questions for discussion'. Is this aimed at book clubs? If so, it seems to me to be rather patronising, as if they cannot think of their own topics, and there is also a whiff of hubris in there somewhere.

The author has also included a 'Labyrinth Tour around Carcasonne'. All a bit twee, I thought, and a bit sub- Da Vinci Tour.

1 out of 5 stars C'est une grande pile de tosh   August 25, 2008

Not sure why I carried on reading this book - out of duty more than interest. Far too long with tedious un interesting characters, laughably naff plot lines, stupid ending, full of proof reading errors. Off to the charity shop with it. Overall - c'est crappe.

4 out of 5 stars Well, I enjoyed it...   August 13, 2008

I found Labryinth a harmless page turner which provided ample escapism on a summer holiday.
It didn't help me with a thesis, but Kate Mosse managed to transport me to another place and time for a few welcome hours each day.
The suspense didn't keep me awake but did have me picking the book up for more.
I found the use of the French language worked well in holding the story in place.
I'm going to try Sepulchre now...

Wow some people really didn't like this book did they!
I really enjoyed it, thought it was fun to read, kept me turning the pages, made me want to visit and I liked the plot!

Funny how we are all so different isn't it!
(The other language and translation did get on my nerves too a little bit though!)

3 out of 5 stars Patchy grail quest fodder   August 7, 2008

Not a bad book, but not a literary masterpiece either. To be quite honest, I don't think the author intended it to be other than a good, undemanding yarn....which it was. There were no huge surprises in the plot outcomes and the reader's credibility was challenged on a number of occasions by the huge number of coincidences and the "dastardly baddie" characterisation was a bit overdone, but a good read by the pool for the holiday.
