5 out of 5 stars Hmmmmmmmmmmmm   June 10, 2008

I am quite surprised that there are people who did'nt like this book, each to their own I suppose. I really enjoyed it, I thought it was a great story, and, like Kate Mosse's last epic Labrinth I found myself caring for the characters and what became of them, like a previous reviewer I enjoyed the past story of Leonie, Anatole and Isolde much more and thought that Victor Constant was a wonderfully dark character. All in all I enjoyed this book greatly. My advice. Give it a try, you might just find it was worth it.

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic read!   June 10, 2008

I can't understand how people can be so critical of this book. I thought it was a fantastic read, I had to put my life on hold until I'd finished it. The characters were so real they just leapt off the page (Leonie in particular), and I thought the story was wonderful. It blended beautifully into the past and then the present. The language and description was beautiful. I found it frightening and utterly gripping. Ms Mosse is the best! Labyrinth was good, but Sepulchre is on another level, it is fabulous. I was totally gripped by it from start to finish and now that I've finished it feel bereft and wonder how and when I'll find another book that I can enjoy as much as this one. I can't wait for Kate Mosse's next novel. I loved it.

3 out of 5 stars Not altogether bad   June 10, 2008

I have now read both Labyrinth and Sepulchre. In each case I enjoyed the story, helped by the fact that I live in the region and have been interested in the Cathares for many years, BUT, although the author praises her editors among others, both books suffer from irritating errors that give the impression that they were not reviewed sufficiently carefully before being rushed into publication. There are many petty instances but they are all sufficient to bring one to a halt and say " why the hell couldn't an editor get that right, even if not the author'! A very simple example is a comment on Meredith and Hal going to bed in linen sheets which become cotton three or four pages later. The second adjective was not needed anyway. The various horse-drawn transport goes under different names for the same vehicle but ALL of them make the same sounds and their carriage lamps 'bang' in the same way. I have doubts about that particular effect. Just to finish, a storm that causes an obstruction to the Mail Coach north of Limoux really cannot be taken seriously when we know, in some detail, that there is a railway connection from Carcassonne to Couiza and beyond.
I hope Mosse will write more in the same vein but I do hope she will revise more and her editors will be more effective.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Stuff!!   June 9, 2008

Ignore the previous critcisms of this book. It is amazing and so interesting to read. I am confused as to why so many people rated it so badly.

The characters are interesting, the story is believable and it is certainly one of my better reads in the last month. I felt that I bonded with the main characters instantly and that the book had true emotion.

If you like James Herbert then you will probably like this author too.

3 out of 5 stars I liked this book   June 8, 2008

I hope others aren't put off by bad reviews, as i enjoyed this book. I agree it can ramble occasionally but it made me want to turn the page, and I liked the sense of menace and the link with tarot, I am so glad i didn't read all the bad reviews before I bought it. It is the first book of hers thatI have read
