A classic November 3, 2004 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Rat snakes have long been the most widely kept snakes in the reptile hobby. The Corn snake being the most popular with beginners and the more experienced alike, this book covers all the species that you are likely to ever see in the hobby. Some of the more unusual animals along with the more common placed so-called rat snakes are discussed in equal detail, together with some useful scale counts as a guide to identification. Although most of the Elaphe group has recently been reclassified following a major revision, this book is still a useful tool for recognition of species and subspecies. The first section deals with general care of rat snakes in captivity; some of this is a little out dated now too. This is followed by the American, European and Asian species of rat snakes and a little of their natural history, aspects of their breeding and captivity requirements are covered along with this. This book contains colour illustrations and photographs to accompany the species accounts. Proving to be a valuable source of reference for any keeper of the many rat snake species - from the hardy corn snake to one of their more delicate Asian cousins, this book is a classic.
