Develops the solution focus way of working a stage further July 6, 2007 The authors have built on earliar books on this topic. The book has a good range of case studies that provide more 'realism' than other books on change management. The underlying 'model' of change management, the solutions approach is easy to use, As an interim manager/consultant I have used it succesfully in very different situations. One strength of the book is the approaches taken by consultants/facilitators in working with organisations, especially the questions they used in working with individuals and groups.
Having read earliar books eg The solutions focus - second edition 2007 (P Jackson/M Mckergow) which gives a better insight into the the actual use/application of the solutions approach, and the layout/style has the edge on this later work. I was a little disappointed with this book. My expectation that further work was needed to illustrate how the solutions approach would apply in wider organisational settings, rather than one to one/coaching and smaller team type settings. This book goes someway to achieving this but not far enough.Perhaps it would have been better if the partnership that wrote the earliar books had continued.
Putting this book in a wider context the solutions approach does break new ground, and is part of a new growth in positive psychology - building on strengths etc.It has applications in a great many situations. I think the solutions approach offers a great deal more than found in many books for example on Organisational Development which have a rather dated feel to them, and it is difficult to see what real benefits are to be gained.
Should you buy this book, yes I think it is worth it. Getting hold the slightly earliar book mentioned earliar is well advised if you want to understand and successfully apply the solutions approach. In other words they are best read together.
The material in this book has some limatations and looking at a wider range of options could be advisable.Drawing on the following fields is worth considering:
* Organisation Design. * Strategy implementation. * Change management.
I have reviewed some of whats available in my other book reviews on amazon.

Real lessons for real managers May 15, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book shows innovative thinking, using a variety of stubborn problems in business being addressed by consultants using solution-focused methods. I was struck by the small amount of face-to-face time required to make what were sometimes very substantial changes in the operation of the business.
I have met some of the coaches and business people whose examples were used. They remain convinced of the value of the methods and of the specific lessons demonstrated.
I found the book easy to read; the format lends itself to retrieving and studying the examples.
