5 out of 5 stars The best pregnancy book   June 5, 2006

Over the course of two pregnancies I have read a great deal of pregnancy literature, but this remains my favourite and have bought several copies for first time pregnant friends over the last few years.

It is not so much of a medical text but rather an exploration of women's thoughts and feelings about what is happening to their minds and bodies during pregnancy, birth and their aftermath.

I highly recommend it as an intelligent woman's pregnancy companion - my only comment is that some of the statistical and medical information must be getting a little out of date by now - time for a new edition please, Virago!!

I found this book to be an uninspiring read, even depressing at times. While I could admire Ms. Mosse's dazzling array of politically correct topics, I felt that much of it slowed the pace of the book and detracted from the more interesting and uninhibited experiences of pregnancy and motherhood. I felt I was being lectured continually on the injustices of sexist pronouns, or about sensitively nicknaming the fetus so as not to offend its masculine or feminine identity. As a result, I felt the book came across as cold, almost scientific, on a topic that, to me, should be heartfelt, and intimate.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!   October 17, 2000

As I am about to be a mother for the first time, I have lots of fears and hesitations mixed in with my excitement. There are lots of questions I have about how I feel both physically and emotionally; "is it normal to feel this way?" kind of thoughts and this book approaches most of them beautifully. Apart from putting my mind at rest, it is a delightful book to read whilst putting your feet up, as you should of course!

5 out of 5 stars The book I returned to over and over again in pregnancy   September 16, 2000

I bought this book when I was first pregnant and I read it in one go, and then reread it several times. It concentrates on the emotional and social aspcts of pregnancy and includes diary entries and comments from pregnant women and mothers.Far more interesting than a bog standard manual.Itelligent and reassuring,I reccomend this book to all my pregnant pals.

5 out of 5 stars My wife and every other mother loves this book   May 26, 2000

A friend gave this book to my wife, who found it the most useful thing she read in her whole pregnancy. Since then, I've bought it for any friend who's become pregnant and they've all loved it. One said she had to ration herself to only a chapter a day as she didn't want to finish it too quickly.

I haven't read it myself, but my wife says Ms Mosse is supposed to be working on an equivalent for fathers. That, I'd read.
