Absolute Beginners Beware May 16, 2006 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
It's still early days for me, but I've found this a bit of a struggle as a first watercolour tutorial book. Whilst I like the concept of diving straight in, I do find that the book glosses over basic things like exactly how wet the paint should be, and whether a wash is done horizontally or vertically for a given effect. A couple of extra pages on basic techniques would have helped me, and so I'm now looking for an alternative primer or face-to-face tuition.
From First Steps to Improver February 18, 2004 17 out of 17 found this review helpful
A sudden urge come over me to have a go at watercolour painting, so I went in search of what I thought would be a suitable book to start me on the right track until I could enrol in an evening class. David Bellamy's Watercolour Landscape Course: From First Steps to Finished Paintings looked perfect to me.I liked the fact that you were not bogged down in painting colour wheels and just mixing colours before you got to paint anything. With just a basic set of colours and a couple of brushes, David encourages you to paint - even on the back on an envelope if you haven't got proper watercolour paper. The demonstrations are easy to follow and the exercises gradually increase in difficulty to stretch you. When I did finally join an evening class, the tutor was impressed with what I had achieved from reading a book. I still refer to it on a regular basis for hints and tips. It's well worth a read.
A wonderful book to learn from November 28, 2001 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
I love David Bellamy's style of painting and find his book has encouraged me to actually put the paint on the paper instead of looking and thinking about it. A great book.
Excellent for beginners in watercolour painting June 19, 2001 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
This is a brilliant book for the budding watercolour artist. His easy to follow style plus the demonstrations and exercises get you up and going quickly. A pity he did not cover some of the subjects in more depth though as I am a numbskull when it comes to art!
A splendid helping hand for aspiring painters! December 3, 1999 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
Copying the exercises and demonstrations in this book helped me more than a year of evening classes! The text is clear and helpful without too many technicalities. Highly recommended for those taking their first steps.
