A lazy Summer Sunday Afternoon. April 8, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have read The curious Incident of The Dog in the Night and it was a total delight. When I read the synopsis of A Spot of Bother I knew this was going to be a very different read. But i'm an avid book lover so, like many other books i have read, I gave it a chance. The difference in the two books was confirmed after a few short chapters. However, the fluidity and energy were still present. The short chapters meant that it can be picked up and dropped in a spare moment to read. Its almost like when you see a family member briefly, everything is very familiar and comfortable and easy to adapt to. Reading this book felt like lazing in a beautiful rose garden on a summer hazy sunday afternoon. The predictability and real life nature of this book is what made it so warm and inviting. Anyone that was dissappointed that it wasn't like his previous book obviously hadn't read the back. It was quite clear it wouldn't be. But the style of easy reading was still there. Making Mark Haddon a firm favourite for an enlightening and endearing read.
Just rubbish April 5, 2008 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
I rarely write reviews. Just wanted to let people know to not waste their money. Complete drivel.
awful March 31, 2008 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
So disappointed in this book. I loved 'The curious incident' and was so looking forward to this.Completly predictable,in fact half way through I skimmed through it, turning several pages at once because it was so dire.
A Spot of Bother - don't bother! March 28, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
If you are looking for a read on a par with 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time' don't bother with this. This is very definitely a lighter, less interesting read. It's okay as long as this is what you expect but personally I was disappointed. That said, I imagine it could make a good film in the Brigit Jones genre with, say, Jim Broadbent as the phobia-ridden cheated-on protagonist, etc. But I can't help feeling we'll see Mark Haddon trot his tedious formula out for another half dozen books. So a big yawn here... Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
I laughed out loud! March 24, 2008 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
This book is hilarious! I can't do it justice in a review but I would certainly recommend it. The characters are very believable and serious subjects are tackled but with a humorous edge. George is struggling to cope with retirement and has convinced himself that he has cancer. His behaviour becomes more and more erratic and he starts to lose touch with reality while the plans for his daughter's wedding carry on around him. I laughed out loud whilst reading this on the bus to work!
