I laughed out loud! March 24, 2008 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
This book is hilarious! I can't do it justice in a review but I would certainly recommend it. The characters are very believable and serious subjects are tackled but with a humorous edge. George is struggling to cope with retirement and has convinced himself that he has cancer. His behaviour becomes more and more erratic and he starts to lose touch with reality while the plans for his daughter's wedding carry on around him. I laughed out loud whilst reading this on the bus to work!
The usual stuff - just done completely differently March 23, 2008 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
At face value, this book shouldn't work - average family fall apart under the average pressures of sex, death and marriage, then finally patch everything up into a happy ending, because, hey, this is a comedy and those are the rules. But actually, this book does work. Damn well. Must be the author's dry, understated, yes, British sense of humour. No other nationality can fashion comedy in such a wry, understated fashion. "Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way" with a cuppa, an apologetic laugh and real emotions carefully masked. Two lumps, for me, please.
Yawwwwwnnnn... March 16, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I started this book a few times but couldn't get past the first few chapters without falling asleep. I stuck with it and the book seemed to just drag on and on. It only got interesting for me half way through but only just. Given how much I enjoyed Curious Incident, I was pretty disappointed with Spot. It seemed to drag on and the ending was a fizzer.
Mark Haddon, thank you! February 21, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I read this book a couple of weeks ago, and I gladly sacrificed some sleep to do it. The protagonist drove me mad, as did the rest of the family, but it all worked around itself to make me really enjoy feeling so frustrated with them all. Aside from this, I haven't laughed at any book so much where I've been so involved with the characters. Definitely read it. You might like to give Herr Lehmann (Mr Lehmann in translation?) a read if you like this, there are some similarities in the protagonists...
So funny in places I couldn't breathe for laughing so hard February 21, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
The initial connection with the book came about beacuse I come from that part of the UK. When I got to the part where "dad" was doing mach 3 I was incapable of any sensibleness - in fact I was laughing so hard that I couldn't make a sound and nearly forgot to breath in and out. It's just so funny in places and I could see it all happening to friends / family.
