Easy and clearly written by the leaders in the field December 13, 2000 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Behaviour of teleost fishes is written by many of the leading researchers in the field of fish behaviour and edited by Tony Pitcher. This becomes apparent when reading because the text is clear and easily understood without compromising the scientific accuracy. The book covers a wide range of material starting with the bases of behaviour such as genetics, motivation and development of behaviour. Part two covers sensory modalities that introduces the reader in a simple way to how the fish experiences its surrounding. Section three on behavioural ecology presents more theoretical ideas and is probably the most difficult section. Even though it may require some more background knowledge from the reader, the material is presented in a clear and concise way. Areas covered relate to foraging, predation, mating, parental care, shoaling, and activity periods. Three sections have a narrower scope that focus on intertidal teleosts, sticklebacks and cave-dwelling fishes. The book is ended with two chapters on fish behaviour in relation to fishing gear and management of fresh water fisheries. As an excellent aid in finding the relevant information, authors, species and subjects are placed in their own indices. I recommend any fish biologist interested in behaviour to get a copy of this book. It is also a very useful resource for the general behaviourist that wants a reference for fish behaviour.
