4 out of 5 stars A helpful contribution - with limitations   May 12, 2006

First impressions? I was really impressed. Someone had actually looked at the mind of a dog and communicating with them in their language rather than forcing them to try ours. Then I would have given five stars - or more!

On reflection there is a good foundation but the story is a little overblown. I applaud her for bringing this form of training to the masses but there are limits.

To start with, there is a very heavy reliance on just a few methods of bonding. There isn't much flexibility in dealing with individual behaviour. The case studies are a bit monotonous - all sorted with recourse to the same methods.

I was also concerned about how much of the book is about the writer. Is this an ego trip or a help-you-dog book? And does she notr realise that many canine problems are caused by the overpopulation and homelessness of dogs that is related to the breeding of dogs she seems to support? I'm confused and wonder what the motivation is.

I've just had a dog expert visit my 2 boys and although she employs a similar approach, she went a lot further and I wonder why she doesn't write a book - there was more information, flexibility and practical information that Jan Fennell put into her book.

In summary, there are some good principles and I think this could help people and their dogs. But it is not the solve-all or final revelation it may seem to be.

5 out of 5 stars Happy Dogs - A how to guide   April 9, 2006

Having had a dog for nine years - I bought this after I was starting again a new pup - It made such a difference to training. The methods are very straight forward and "do-able". You know a book is good when you are recommending it to people you meet out walking on the beach - one woman - wrestling with a dobermann - looked at my pup and asked "how do you do that?" To which I replied - "Have you seen that film the horse whisperer....". I have this conversation regularly. Terrific book.

5 out of 5 stars Sensible, practical and kind   April 5, 2006

Finally, I have found a method of communication that is not only kind to the dog (i.e. no need for vile choke/check chains and spray/shock collars) but a way to give the dog a life it will truly enjoy. Jan Fennell thoroughly explains her methods and the reasons behind them in this book and you will find yourself not only wanting to know more about the method itself, but more about Jan and all of the colourful cases she has experienced in her career. Definately not a method for the lazy owner, but for people wanting to work at the special relationship between man and dog it is a gem!

3 out of 5 stars Some interesting methods   January 20, 2006

I found this book very easy to digest and it did come up with some interesting training methods for any dog owner. However, I felt that the chapters in the book were too similar, as in each chapter the method and outcome was the same as in the last. I do feel that this book will help anyone who wishes to improve their dog's behaviour, if you don't mind a bit of repetition!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting insight   December 29, 2005

I found this book very interesting, it literally helps you to understand why your dog behaves the way they do which in turn helps you to train them in a language that they understand. I would recommend this book to dog lovers anywhere.
