A response to that daft PS3 > 360 review. April 28, 2008 11 out of 25 found this review helpful
It turns out the 360 version of GTAIV is full 720p with 2xAA, while the PS3 version is upscaled from 1120x630 (630p). That's around 30% more pixels on 360. Source: Beyond3D tech forum.
Regardless, both versions are 10/10.
Fantastic!! April 26, 2008 25 out of 39 found this review helpful
Well I got the game through the post today to both my surprise and delight. I did not get it off Amazon but here is my review anyway. After playing it all day I can honestly say it is the best game of the lot and probably the best game out on the 360. Liberty city is obviously based on New York and is probably the same size! It is vast, there is so much to do and I haven't even got off the first island yet. From the airport, where you can entertain yourself racing planes and getting chased by the police to the various bowling allies, bars and clubs there is loads to discover and entertain. The driving has changed significantly, and is a lot harder, but the first few missions get you up to scratch quickly, and after hating it originally I've been converted. Some of the muscle cars are exceptionally hard to handle but their great fun to drive. I've completed 17 missions so far and I'm 9% of the way through the game. They haven't really set my pants on fire but there is obviously still many more to do. Some of the better missions so far have been killing a so called 'rat' after chasing him from the train station on foot and ending up on a massive car chase! another mission involved shaking up a couple of porn stars in their shop for not paying protection money! Game play overall is fantastic, and the graphics are exceptional. one drawback is in certain parts of the city at night, its so dark you can hardly see. I've tried playing around with my TV to no prevail, but im sure if your playing on a decent set you wont have any problems. A welcome edition to this game is the use of the mobile phone, which makes it a lot easier to contact your associates and start missions without having to drive for ages back to base. Also the introduction of the auto save after missions have makes life a lot easier. There is so much to this game that it would takes me days to write a decent review but take my word for it that this game is amazing and it will be a long, long, long time before I finish playing it.

The very best in video games April 25, 2008 14 out of 29 found this review helpful
Now that I've had the game for a few days and played it for about 12 hours I thought I'd update my review that I posted earlier
Firstly - should you buy the game? Undoubtedly yes! If you enjoyed the last 3 you wil almost certainly like this one. Rockstar have taken may of the great qualities of GTA and kept them WHILE improving many of the slightly annoying details.
A good example is the new AUTOSAVE feature which saves your progress at the end of a (successful) mission. With San Andreas I used to have to drive to a safehouse to save between missions - now I rarely visit a safehouse.
Also Rockstar have changed the way you die - now if you lose your health completely you `wake up' At the local hospital, lose a small amount of money but you KEEP YOUR WEAPONS. Previously you would have had to visit the ammunition to buy new gear.
When you fail a mission now you get a text which lets you go back straight to the beginning of the mission without the need to travel there. Brilliant change.
The aiming mechanism used to be a pain in the backside but now it is much improved. You can lock on to a bad guy by holding the left trigger and fire by pressing the right trigger. Alternatively, if you want to free-aim then just hold the left trigger halfway down.
All of the changes above make the game so much better in my opinion.
The game play has not changed terribly, but if it isn't broke, don't fix it. The cars handle with more difficulty than previously but you will adapt pretty soon to the new style of driving.
The level of detail in the game is the reason it gets 10/10 from me - the many thousands of bins, phones, litter, graffiti, posts are incredible. However Rockstar managed to fit this on a DVD is incredible. It must have taken thousands of man hours to program the amount of detail in this game.
The missions are similar to previous games with a few new ones e.g. chasing a subway train whilst on the road in a car. The first few are very easy and serve as a tutorial to the new controls but not one so far has been a chore to complete.
Commit a crime and the cops come after you. Get a high enough wanted level (shown by stars on the screen) and they make it very difficult for you to get away. A three star wanted level meant a helicopter was trailing me last night and it took about 10 minutes of frantic driving through alleys and making fast turns to lose the cops. Pricelessly good gameplay tho...
In summary, this game is incredible. The only other 360 game which comes close to it is call of duty 4 which in my opinion was amazing. However COD 4 will only last about 6 hours and GTA 4 wll last much much longer (14% completed after about 12 hours)
This game is the definition of UNMISSABLE. 10/10

I got a pre-release press copy of this game and it is the best in the series. It's not gonna change your life, it's not the best thing on the xbox, but it is very very good fun!
