Genius writing and delivery August 24, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Having chanced upon the very beginning of the first episode when it was first aired I became hooked, cancelling appointments that might conflict with subsequent airings.
The writers are developing ideas which are taking the sit-com genre to a rib-bustingly painful new level.
Many things combine to translate a good script into a good product. All of these are in evidence in Green Wing Series 1 [2004]. I find myself watching and re-watching the DVD's thinking, "That's a clever way to shoot that bit" and "I wonder if that was written or improvised". It's hard to tell because there is so much talent in evidence at any one time.
I am a fan, so I apologise if I sound a little too fanatical. I am trying to be objective, but Green Wing is so well done and so different to anything else on offer I find it hard to restrain my memories of it when reviewing it for others.
Just buy it! Take the phone off the hook and try to watch just one episode at a time. Bet you can't.
Make sure you've enough left in the bank for the second series. And the Special. And your own Penny Whistle.
I love it, but this also comes with a warning!!! August 7, 2008 I've only just discovered this show via Four on demand, you can watch all of the episodes for free there, I only watched the first episode of this series and the first two of series 2 and I knew that I'd enjoy the rest, which is the case.
I came across a strange problem with this series, on the first disc it would not allow me to select an episode, I could select/watch the deleted scene no problem at all, the other 2 discs worked with no problems at all, the first disc does work in my other 2 DVD players though, so hopefully not many other people will endure this small inconvenience, or large if you have no other means of playing the first 3 episodes.
Outrageous is the one word I'd use for this series, where comic actors can and do do just about anything for a laugh, expect totally over the top comedy with I guess alot of generally childish humour, but I've no problems with that, if you have a broad sense of humour then I'm sure that at least 90% of people will love this, if not then it's best left alone for the rest of us to enjoy.
I've tried to watch Scrubs, but for me Green Wing far outstrips that, I honestly don't know what comedy to compare this to, so I won't, but the Office or Scrubs this isn't, at least not for me anyway.
Not funny July 3, 2008 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
Didn't make me laugh once. It was just full of smart arse jokes which don't make me laugh. I guess I like to be reeled in with a bit of emotion before the punch lines. I just didn't feel any of the characters were likable. I don't think anyone can beat Spaced or Black Books - although I only really watched Black Books for Bill Bailey. It was described as surreal and its just not surreal if its ALL surreal ALL the time. It has to be surprising, strangeness in moments you least expect. Spaced had this down to a t. Oh well.

One of the best British comedies EVER. Seriously you won't regret buying it. Every character is amazingly funny. Dry, sarcastic, quit witted humor. Some cringy bits with great story lines.
*********buy it!*********
So this is what the great British sitcom has been reduced to, is it? May 30, 2008 1 out of 7 found this review helpful
Whacky, anarchic, trendy, cool, cutting edge. These are just some of the things this show has been called. How about contrived, smug, self satisfied, self indulgent, infantile. Let's have a bit of balance shall we.
