really disappointing May 11, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
the worst book-to-film adaptation i have EVER seen. what a shame. the books are amazing, this film is absolutely terrible. it's confusing, if i hadn't read the book i wouldn't have a clue what was happening. the special effects are poorly done. lyra seems to be reading her lines and doesn't know what she's meant to be doing. the relationships between the characters are non-existent and nobody seems to know who anybody else is... there's too much packed into not enough time...did they run out of money? were the actors working on other things at the same time so they forgot who/where they were supposed to be? the bears are the one saving grace but still i hate this film and am sooooo disappointed. i won't be watching the others. AND BY THE WAY, MR FILM MAKER, IT'S NOT A COMPASS!!!!
Excellent May 10, 2008 3 out of 9 found this review helpful
What a treat to watch.I found no problem getting my head around the plot as some others seem to have and am eagerly awaiting the next film. My heart soared at the ideas present within it and the parallels with our own predicament throughout earth's history, where various corporations/churches/organisations/ and other such institutions, formed or where usurped by diseased power mad groups of individuals, Blocking or perverting the growth of natures liberating knowledge for the sake of money/power whilst advancing the destructive elements. the fathers of lies and ignorance are present right here and right now with there flock of brain damaged sheep. This film gets the thumbs up from me and I was shocked to see the negativity in some of the reviews, I smell evangelical fundamentalists.
???????????????????? May 8, 2008 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
What a huge disapointment. I could not not work out what was supposed to be happening and found it very boring. My kids could not get into it, one fell asleep and the other walked out of the room to do their homework. I would not recommend this film to anybody. Its about time Nicole Kidman took acting lessons, she is awful in it.
totally inconsistent May 7, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
The script is just awful, inconsequent, unintelligible. I haven't read the book so the movie is totally inconsistent. You can watch the movie but don't ask what is about.
Got by the gobblers ...................... May 6, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The one thing this film does really well is to give a stunning visual portrayal of Lyra's world - turn the soundtrack off and you couldn't want for better but that's about as far as it goes - you get a sense of the most tremendous lack of enthusiasm as the film goes on and performances become ever more wooden. This was always going to be a difficult film to make but above all it fails to establish the crucial nature of the relationship between humans and their daemons and all the cruelty and menace of the book is driven by that. "Don't worry Billy" says Ma Costa to the severed child "we'll find your daemon." ........now that's really missing the point. If anything's had it's daemon cut away I think it's this film. -
