Perfect for its genre! July 25, 2008 I really liked this movie! It's not a life-changing deep thought-provoking film but it does raise some important issues. The acting is brilliant, the storyline is original (for those who haven't read the book), the production and direction is really good and ... Gerard Butler is soooo gorgeous! You can really sympathize with Hillary Swank's character for being so upset about losing a guy like him, where ever are you going to find anyone that comes even close to such perfection??? (hee, hee)!
I didn't mind that they have changed the story but maybe that's because I read the book a while ago and only remember the gist of it and not specifics.
Also, it was fun to see Lisa Kudrow although it's like seeing Phoebe again with some of her 'other' friends!
I highly recommend this movie for a quiet Sunday afternoon if you want to have a good cry!!!
Calming July 8, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have recently gone through a loss and trauma myself. My friends didn't think that watching this film at this stage of my life is wise. But.. OK, probably cried more then anyone else watching it, but the film left me with the feeling that this also will pass, that I'm not alone with my pain and that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Very calming and oh, those Irish guys :D Recommend from the bottom of my shattered heart

"I hope life treats you kind And I hope you have all you've dreamed of And I wish you joy and happiness But above all this I wish you love
And I... Will always love you"
(Whitney Houston)
Gerry (Gerard Butler) and Holly (Hilary Swank) are married, without children, and are very much in love. Swept off her feet at a tender age by the handsome Irishman, Holly isn't exactly sure what she wants from life, and this leads to petty squabbles and extremely hot making up afterwards.
Before they really get started, the Fates snip Gerry's thread, and Holly is left with a snazzy urn and an empty apartment, which she proceeds to fill with her blue funk.
Her thirtieth birthday brings a big surprise, as it seems that for once, Gerry has made a plan. Gerry's gift goes on giving, and gradually Holly comes to terms with her life, while we, the audience, get to look on with unbridled glee.
Butler is as easy on the eyes as always, and Swank pulls off a difficult role with apparent ease. Lisa Kudrow is a perfect friend, and Kathy Bates proves unsinkable. Other good performances are logged by Gina Gershon and Harry Connick Jnr.
Short Attention Span Summary (SASS):
1.Sometimes even death can't end an undying love
A chick flick, but an extremely watchable one, especially for fans of Gerard Butler.

A Wondeful Film June 28, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have wanted to watch this movie ever since it came out, and especially after I read the book. Although it is quite different from the book, which I love also, I thought the film was absolutely wonderful. I don't agree with anyone who says don't watch it because it is nothing like the book. a book i s a book and a film is a film. The book is brilliant, but the film is also brilliant in its own way.
I don't know how many times I started to cry in this film, I lost count. The acting is outstanding and the way the film is put together is really good too. you still get the escence of the book. Yes, there are some characters taken out, a different setting and it goes a different way sometimes, but it isn't the book as a film, it is a film based on the book.
So anyone who reads the reviews saying don't watch it, ignore them. This is a wonderful heart warming film, which you will need tissues for. I must say that this is now one of my favourite films!!!
NOT GOOD TO WATCH IF YOUVE READ THE BOOK. June 21, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am so dissapointed by this film. Ive read the book about 12 times because quite frankly its one of the best books ive ever read. Cecelia Ahern is an amazing author. Sadly i didnt see this in cinema and couldnt find it online to watch first before buying so i bought it straight off. Thats such a waste of 12 When i first heard they were making it into a film i was so excited it was unbelieveable. When i read the book i cried with laughter on so many occasions so obviously i thought the movie would be able to make it 10 times funnier. In my opinion the movie is slow, hard to get into and the furthest thing from the book. I understand they have to make changes when turning a book into a film but they just took it over the top with this one. Was it really necessary to; completely change Hollys mothers name, reduce the family from 6 members to 3, miss out the lilo scene, set it in america, make daniel look like a homeless person, make holly seem like less of a grieving widow by making her sleep with that guy when she goes to ireland, make her mother seem evil and own a pub. Gosh! it annoys me so much. If they had stuck to the book alot more then everyone would have really loved it but i think they have ruined it for those of us who have actually read the book. And the woman who played Ciara couldnt act to save her life. I must admit i did laugh quite a lot at the lake scene (unfortunately that was my only laugh of the whole film) but i think the lilo scene would have been so much better. plus they didnt really make the girls that funny although lisa and gina were the best in the movie. I dread to think what it would have been like without them. Hilary Swank and Gerrard Butler were sooooo wrong for these parts. Even when reading the book i imagined Holly as a sort of Reese Witherspoon character. In the movie Holly seems to get over Gerry really quickly. If only i had the money i would re make this movie, making it as truly awesome as it should be. So to sum up....i thought it was not worth watching unless you want to be disappointed. i highly doubt ill be watching it again anytime soon. It is much better for those who havent read and are not planning to read the book.
