Getting Better June 27, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A definite must for all Futurama fans, and it certainly improves on Benders' Big Score. The story has three main plots; Frys' relationship with Brittany Murphys' character and then the giant alien, Bender entering the League of Robots, and the relationship of Kif and Amy. The plots are good, but very loosely linked. If each had had a little more thought put into them, then each could have been a very good individual episode. Instead what we have is a jumble of stories that jump from one to the other very sporadically. There are some great moments, and old characters are used to good effect. Hedonism-Bot has a welcome large role, but the Robot Devils' appearance is all too brief. The ending is nice and rounded, apart from one last desperate attempt to link two key story lines. A noble effort from the Futurama team, let us hope the momentum continues with the next two instillations.
Back to the Futurama... June 26, 2008 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Ok, we all know the story. Matt Groening creates Futurama, it runs for 5 years, it gets cancelled, the Simpsons becomes terrible, FUTURAMA RETURNS!
After Bender's Big Score, we were all curious to what was gonna happen next and the big question was, will the next part HIT or MISS?
In most places, it hits but unfortunatly there are a number of places where it misses. These are only minor speed-bumps but there a some parts where fans will wanna say "This could have been better!" Needless to say, one of the things that makes Futurama great is character development (something the Simpsons doesn't have). We have Fry with his new girlfriend, Amy and Kif tieing the knot and Bender joining the League of Robots. This is enough to please the geekiest Futurama Fans.
Overall, if your a Futurama fan, don't miss out. Although some may love it and some may loath it.
Too few laughs, too much padding. June 26, 2008 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
The crack in space created by Bender after his Big Score allows a multi-tentacled planet-being to invade our universe, wherepon it 'mates' with every living being. When everyone decides to join the creature in paradaisical bliss in it's own universe, a jealous Bender goes into action..
Whilst I'd never wholly condemn anything with Matt Groening's name on the masthead - even at his worst, he's still head and shoulders above-the competition - there are several rather baffling aspects of 'BWABB' that rather impeded my enjoyment: First of all, the continuity of the last eight years has rather broken down here:- Nibbler's race seemingly no longer exists; For the sake of a single gag, we find out that Bender apparently has a house and family in the suburbs: The pointless subplot, about Benders membership of the 'League Of Robots' -a supposedly revolutionary group who in fact sit around quaffing brandy and smoking cigars in the style of a British gentlemen's club - baffled me completely, as I couldn't grasp at all the satirical/parodic point that someone was obviously trying to make. Most of all, however, the film simply has too few jokes and too little story to justify it's 90 minutes running time:It's padded out with many, many superfluous scenes - One could quite easily edit this into a 25 minute episode without losing any of the plot. I'll be buying the next Futurama movie in October, no doubt, but I don't think this one will be getting put into the DVD player very often.
Hail To My Fellow Leegy Weegies. June 24, 2008 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
Apologies to those who have not seen the DVD yet as the title won't make any sense.
While I'm on the topic - by all rights no one anywhere should have seen this DVD yet as it has only today seen its US release; yet so many of us seem to have already done so (myself over a week ago). As a fan I couldn't resist the urge to download an avi copy from a "public" source as soon as it was posted, but I still intend to part with cash and pay for a copy. I wonder how many people that have longed for Futurama's return will jeopardise the chance of a new series by not paying for a copy.... (rant over).
On the whole, this movie is a very worthy addition to the Futurama legacy. The only real disappointment comes with the pace. The story is slow to develop for the first chapter, and then rapidly builds momentum into the second and third chapters with almost non-stop visual and dialogue jokes. Unfortunately, the pace dies rather quickly and the last chapter seems to drag on and on to the point where the ending seems less and less important to the story.
The ending also left me under whelmed as there is no dramatic climax, and it leaves us without a cliff-hanger for the next instalment - not even a hint of things to come.
From reading others reviews it seems people are already far too complacent after only 2 new instalments following a 5 year gap.
Despite the flaws above (which is just my opinion), I'm delighted to have new episodes to watch with all the old cast on-board. There is a fresh and different feel to these new offerings. It seems as though the writers and producers have actually listened to fans to help steer the content and choice of characters. Without spoiling anything, anyone that fails to find the League Of Robots scenes hilarious needs help. I just hope Hedonism Bot and Calculon make appearances in the next instalments.
In conclusion - if you want to treat this as a 1.5 hour "movie", you may find fault. If instead you take the emphasis off the main story and just enjoy, then this is a great watch with some of the most hilarious moments I have ever seen in Futurama.
Not a load of 'Genticles'... June 19, 2008 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
Much better outing for the Planet Express crew this time around. A good addition to the collection after the 'Blip' that was 'Benders Big Score', and some truly memorable bits!
Personal Highlight was Stephen Hawkings Head at the Science Seminar.
