Never mind the whys and wherefores... November 29, 2003 32 out of 33 found this review helpful
While not all your favourite G&S tunes have been captured here, this double CD collection certainly represents a fine selection of the duo's best ditties taken from their D'Oyly Carte repertoire and therefore good value for money. The performances are goodish, with one or two slightly below par. This high quality production of songs recorded between 1961 and 73 emphasises clear vocal enunciation to allow the listener to enjoy Gilbert's witty libretto, slightly at the expense of the slightly muted orchestral sound. Still, credit to Decca for this release, which may help to restore their reputation and open the world of opera bouffe to a new generation.
