But in response to the reviewer that said:
'She needs to learn that a great voice doesn't need all the wobbly bits. That's for lesser voices that need to cover up their short-comings. '
What the hell is that supposed to mean? Apart from being down right insulting, its only quite ignorant. Its called singing the BLUES. Try singing the blues , and you'll find that its alot harder than you expected. A singer is one level up vocally if she can sing 'normally', like the lesser voices and ALSO incorporate those twiddly bits to give a song some raw emotion. What do we want? Flat and tone deaf singers like Kate Nash ? Nah mate.
Hit and Miss March 9, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this cd on the basis of the single Chasing Pavements, as I am sure many have done.
Her voice is lovely, a little like Kate Nash, or a female version of Paulo Nutini - with a gritty, raw edge that is full of feeling.
Similarly to Paulo Nutini, her youth is evident in her song-writing and the album is a mixture of some beautiful and well crafted pieces, such as 'Make you feel my love' which is a gorgeous piano ballad, the lovely 'Hometown Glory' and of course 'Chasing Pavements'. Other songs on the album, as others have commented, lack the strength of these songs and are (in my opinion) less well crafted.
I think Adele is someone to watch. If she continue to grow and develop she could one day emulate some of the astonishing song-writing that Amy Winehouse has achieved (although I hope without the emotional fallout!).
Certainly one to watch!

Just when I find myself wondering at what point the industry will reach critical mass in its' capacity to absorb new young female performers along comes another 19 year old with an eye to the main chance.
Comparisons are inevitable but let's try to judge this debut offering on its' own merits.
Adele can sing. Her ability to pin down a melody with quirky confidence and charm does press most of the right buttons but there's something missing here which I'm finding hard to articulate.
She is at her best in the simpler arrangements when her warm tone and jazzy inflections are allowed to stand on their own but with repeated listening the phrase 'one trick pony' keeps insinuating its' way into a full appreciation of this album.
Sure, in terms of production it has had a lot of moolah thrown at it but a badly integrated string section is no guarantee of enhanced quality and credibility. Some of the crass and intrusive arrangements, notably on 'Cold Shoulder', 'Melt My Heart to Stone' and 'Tired' are truly horrible.
For a first offering I could not be so cruel as to dismiss it outright - she's not long out of school for god's sake - but I guess I'll have to wait for her next excursion for me to be entirely convinced.
Advice to her writing/production team - Next time KEEP IT SIMPLE !
Not a good album. March 7, 2008 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
Chasing Pavements is a brilliant song but all of the other songs on the album aren't that great. Adele is a fantastic singer but I think Chasing Pavements will be a one-hit wonder.
A unique and talented voice... February 25, 2008 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
I first saw Adele performing Daydreamer on Jools Holland like many people and was captivated by the quality of her voice. It's the voice which sets her apart from her contemporaries - only Amy Winehouse can compete with it's scatalogical versatility - and it is indeed a fascinating instrument. Just as you think it is a gentle evocative warble on Daydreamer she belts out Chasing Pavements from the bottom of her stomach and just as you are captivated by the raw emotion of that Eg White Classic she is launching into the poppy feelgood refrain of Right as Rain. My personal favourite is First Love with it's tinkling Celeste and vamped interpretation. It's not finished there though - she does a good job of Bob Dylan's classic Make you feel my love - only eclipsed by Louise Setara's recent version, lulls us with the touching Melt my heart to stone and finishes off with the moving parochial lament of Hometown Glory. And remember, many of these songs are written or co-written by Adele herself. It's easy to lump her in with the North London mafia of Kate Nash and Jack Penate but I think this girl is something different....something special. This is one of those albums which you simply must own...enjoy! Neil
