It adds up to Nothin' February 28, 2008 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
I'll be fair and give this album 1 star for musicianship and production and another for choice of songs. However, for me, the album only shows what great songs they were when sang by someone else. The songs lack any of their original height of passion, warmth or depth of despair and the low point is the song 'Nothin'. When I hear Townes Van Zantes sing this song I feel knocked over by his despair and self anger. Here Robert Plant and Alison Krauss give what they describe as a bluegrass version. Actually it's just sung in a bland wallpaper manner. And for me that sums up this album.
Demonstrating the power of marketing over music... February 25, 2008 4 out of 10 found this review helpful
It's clearly making money for somebody, but artistically it barely rates one star. Krauss with Union Station is terrific, Plant on his own terms is deservedly something of a legend, but together - as many reviews have commented - both these artists are dumbed down to a shadow of their abilities. The production is dreary and the sound is lifeless. I can't help thinking that it could have been really quite something, instead of which, it's really quite poor.
Tread Carefully........... February 24, 2008 18 out of 24 found this review helpful
I always think that it is a great pity when a reviewer gets an 'unhelpful' mark against his or her review, when all that they have tried to do is give an honest and hopefully unbiased review of an album. Just because you may not like someone putting down your favourite artist(s) doesn't make the review 'unhelpful'. I have lots of albums from some of my very favourite artists who have still shown an ability at some stage to go 'off the rails' and produce something I just don't like. So then , to this album. I love Robert Plant. I love Alison Krauss. Unfortunately, together on this album, it just doesn't work. Most of the tracks are dragging and slow. I found myself sitting through each of the slow songs, and praying for the next track to be more uptempo or uplifting. It just doesn't happen. One slow depressing song trudges into the next, and I found myself watching the countdown timer on the CD player anticipating the end of each track. I really had to force myself to stay in my seat and not reach for the 'open drawer' button. I bought the album on the strength of 'Gone Gone Gone', and this is probably the most lively song on the album. As other reviewers have said, forget the hype - ignore the stars, you really need to try to make your own mind up. I think that this album has only got so high in the Amazon chart because many have bought the album without hearing more than what is on the promotional clip, what they've read in newspaper reviews, or are already big fans of either Plant or Krauss. This album may well hit the mark for some people, but you only have to look at the wildly differing reviews from one to five stars and all stops in between to realise that whilst some may love it, some really hate it. Sorry guys, I know you're going to hate me, but for me this album has little or no life in it, and my copy after only about six complete plays is probably never going to get played again. If you already own it and love it, that's fine. I am very happy for you. But if you haven't already purchased it, tread carefully.....Try to listen before you buy!
Boring pipe smokers utopia February 22, 2008 4 out of 17 found this review helpful
I really dont get the hype. Ive tried and tried to listen to this and consisently failed to reach the end. Its monotonous lifeless garbage that just gets under your skin because its so appallingly mundane. Ive even tried just listening to it late at night with no distractions and it still fails to impress. Take my hint...dont buy it UNLESS you are a pipe smoking anorak that buys music that doesnt intrude into your every day life ie background supermarket trash while you discuss what colours of beige compliment your magnolia kitchen.
Dreadful February 21, 2008 3 out of 16 found this review helpful
Bought this due to all the hype and Sunday Times album of the year What a waste, it is dire
To think that RP is touring to promote this when LZ could be on the road makes my soul bleed!!!
