Less than impressed February 7, 2006 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
I know this software got rave reviews but it was a massive disapointment to me. Also being software I expect its not likely to be returnable. I have been learning for two months or so and have tried a few books/ DVDs before and thought that this might be the best way of learning - It could be much easier to use than a DVD or video and yet have video etc so you can see what to do. (A book on its own I find difficult as static pictures are difficult to use). I think the major limitation is the software design. It appears to be quite old and has major limitations because of this. For example: The software installed easily but has no options to install to disk so you need the CD every time you use it or you have to manually copy the CD and then install from that (A minor irritation). The user interface is so unclear an entire lesson has to be dedicated to it and even then the icons are not memorable. Navigation within the lessons is a mess. The display does not use all the screen of a SVGA display so you have to resize your display down to VGA to get good picture size. The snapshots of video are so fuzzy I can't see any detail. (Even after changing my display and fiddling with the number of colours).Overall not worth the money and I am unsure if I will persist any more with it. I would love to see if the Deluxe Version is any better but I am not going to pay the authors any more money to find out.

I have it installed on XP and have had no problems running the software at all. In relation to an earlier review, of course you need the cd in the drive to run it otherwise it would take up about a gig of space on your harddrive. And by the way if you have that amount of space free, copy the contents of the cd onto your harddrive and run the install from there instead of from the cd. As for the software itself it is very easy to use.The lessons work in a step by step way to enable you to play the songs at the end of each set of lessons. It also has each excerise available at a slower tempo enabling you to gradually build up your speed. The other advantage is that there are videos of a close up of someone playing so you can actually see what you are meant to be doing. Great peice of software. Much better than having a book with the cd in the back. Only negative thing I'd say is the songs are not the complete song. They just have the first half of the song. But then they do give you the techniques to be able to look the rest up on the net and be able to work it out.

I've tried a fair few guitar tutoring softwares, and I gave up with each one because they were boring or hard to learn, but this software is great. The songs you learn are really good and catchy, and ones you've actually heard of (by Black Sabbath, Greenday, Bryan Adams and more). The lessons are just the right difficulty, not too easy or hard, and you'll feel as though you are learning really quickly. Why only 4/5? The interface buttons are a little meaningless and take some getting used to. Also I had no problems running it under Windows XP Home.
Problems Running Under Win XP May 11, 2005 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
I'm just learning to play so as yet cannot comment on the quality of the coaching in this software. What I can comment on is the dreadful problems I had getting it to run under Windows XP. It installed no problem. You then need to have the disc in the drive to run it. I clicked on the icon and got an almost endles variety of error messages. It would not run. It froze XP almost every time forcing a re-start. I'm a very experienced computer user, but nothing I tried worked. I even tried it on a completely fresh XP install with no other apps installed, it still wouldn't run. I called the tech support line and they were unable to provide an answer. Apart from the usual lame, "we don't have a clue - so it may be a virus" excuse. My system more than met the minimum requirements and is clean and virus free. I eventually solved the problem by mounting an image of the disc on a virtual CD Drive on the hard drive. It now runs perfectly. But no way would it run from my CD or DVD hardware drives as it's supposed to. One thing to note, this is old style 16 bit software! It even talks about running it under Windows 3.1 in the leaflet!!! I only hope it helps me learn to play better than it runs "from the box". I'm also still waiting, a week on, for the promised return call from their tech support. I hope you don't experience the problems I did, but if you do I hope my solution will be of help.

This software is EXCELLENT! After hours of searching the internet looking for some good guitar software ive finally found it. There are 5 Different levels of difficulty to tackle which will leave you sitting at my cumputer actually "Playing" for hours not wanting to put your guitar down. Popular songs with Video makes things so much easier. You can even play at half tempo until you get used to playing and then play at full tempo. With nice easy to follow lessens in sections anyone will be able to follow and make quick progress with this program! I cant say enough good things about it, my playing has come on really well and quickly i cant wait to complete it and get Intermediate Guitar Coach.
