Dramatically improved production environment August 20, 2006

Apple's Logic 7 provides a dramatically improved production environment over its Emagic predecessor Logic 6, but at the cost of becoming a single platform system. Windows is no longer supported.
Logic has for a long time been one of the top three commercial recording solutions, the other two being Pro Tools and Cubase. Its main advantage has always been its completeness. At the one end, it interfaces with top-of-the-tree Pro Tools TDM hardware, and at the other it links into Apple's free GarageBand. In fact, it is even able to use GarageBand instruments and loops. It offers professional level scoring, full midi-sequencing, and, since Logic 7, is accompanied by the WaveBurner mastering suite.
With version 7, this completeness is further enhanced by the inclusion of a full suite of software instruments, previously available from Emagic for more than the cost of the version 7 upgrade, including the EX24 sampling suite, and a range of sythesizers and digital piano modules. Apple has also substantially boosted the plugin range, providing a top-notch reverb system which rivals Waves software, as well as a Vocoder, and a pitch corrector which rivals Antares Autotune. Of crucial importance is the addition of a phase linear EQ, effectively allowing completely transparent EQ mastering, although Apple warns that this plugin will drain substantial processor power.
Different parts of this software will please different people. Apple's Guitar Amp plugin is less advanced than, say, the Roland VG-88, and its software instruments are less intuitive than their hardware equivalents. Likewise, owners of Waves Platinum edition are likely to want to continue to run their own high-end plugins, and professional scorers will want to continue with Sibelius or Coda Finale. The massive attraction of Logic is that it can just as easily be configured to be the organising hub of all these options. Logic also provides strong integration with Apple's Final Cut Pro, for video, and, more interestingly, with competitor Avid's OMF standard.
Users with access to more than one Mac will further be pleased with the ability to configure a second G5 or Intel based machine as a Logic node, taking on some of the work of signal processing. No further copies of Logic are needed for this. However, Airport users should recognise that it requires a physical 1 Gigabit connection -- it will not work wirelessly.
Logic 7 is magnificent, but still not perfect. Apple has tidied up some of the bizarre interfacing, but this product is still definitely its own thing, and will confuse the occasional user. There's a nice introduction for Garage Band users, but, seriously, experience with Garage Band does little to prepare the user for Logic, which remains the most un-Apple-like of all Apple's offerings.
Nonetheless, for a complete recording system that has virtually every feature you are ever likely to need, and will interface with almost everything you own, yet will fit on your laptop and travel with you, this is a marvel.
