4 out of 5 stars There is one bug in it but it's great all the same   May 9, 2007

The one bug in this is that the spell checker proofing tools break the spell checker in Outlook Express and defaults to French if you do a full install (this seems to be an XP flaw as it didn't happen on my new vista pc). This cannot be changed. If you want more than UK proofing for Word and can do without a spellchecker for Outlook and Outlook Express (you can buy spellcheckers on the net cheaply) then that isn't a problem, but if you want a UK spellchecker and are happy with only UK proofing tools in Word you can install only the UK ones in a custom install.
There is no compatibility problem for opening files made in earlier versions. This one will open files from those in compatibility mode and they can then be saved in the new format or you can save a new document or spreadsheet in 97 - 2003 format. Just double click the Office file you want to open and it will open in the compatibility mode and then use the drop down menus when you save to turn it into 2007 format. The older versions won't open documents saved in this version's default format. Apparently there is a download that enables that (but, I'm told, it is at a cost). It has lost Outlook but for most students and home users Outlook Express is perfectly good enough for emailing and the addition of OneNote for notes and that sort of thing is probably more useful. I love it. The bug is the only thing that stopped it getting five stars.

5 out of 5 stars Great value for money   April 30, 2007

I required Word, Excel, Outlook and OneNote leaving me only two viable options - either Office 2007 Standard Edition plus OneNote 2007 (total cost > [...]) or Office Home & Student 2007 Edition plus Outlook 2007 (total cost < [...]). An obvious choice, and it's worth pointing out that OneNote is still a largely undiscovered yet indispensible piece of software, allowing even the most organised of people to effectively collate all of their notes into one place, whether these be task lists; screenshots (known as clippings in OneNote) of literally anything, with intelligent URL capture of 'clipped' web pages; printed documents from any other program (via the OneNote printer driver); etc. A key feature of OneNote is the exclusion of 'save' options, meaning that everything you do in OneNote is automatically saved as you do it, so no more lost work in the event of a crash. It is logical to include OneNote in a package which is also aimed at students, as I can see exactly how a student might use this application to organise their study notes, timetables, revision, etc. I would have used OneNote extensively had it been available when I was a student!
The 2007 versions of Word and Excel extend their superseded cousins with a polished feel, and rendering in tune with Internet Explorer 7 (this is visible across the entire 2007 range of Office applications). Excel 2007 finally supports a realistic number of rows (1048576) and offers considerable new and improved functionality. Creating tables in Word 2007 is now easier than ever, and Times New Roman has finally been replaced as the default font. There are all sorts of improvements that will make you smile, and that is true of this entire Office product, which offers great value for money when you consider that it can installed on up to three PCs in your household under just the one licence.
Highly recommended even without Outlook, which can of course be purchased separately.

4 out of 5 stars Outlook? No need. Incompatibility? Not if you update.   April 20, 2007

Assuming you're running Windows Vista, you won't need Outlook any more (for basic email/calendar/contacts needs) because Vista comes supplied with Windows Mail, Windows Calendar, etc.

As for incompatibilities, it's true that older versions of Office cannot open/edit Office 2007 documents. However, there is a Compatibility Pack available from Microsoft (official update) for earlier versions Office (XP, 2003, etc) that lets you open/edit/save Office '07 documents for Word, Powerpoint, and Excel, using older versions.

2 out of 5 stars Great but!   April 19, 2007

I ran the free trial for the sixty days and yes it was an improvement, so I purchased the upgrade from Amazon That was the start of my problems.

The usually seamless Microsoft install failed to happen, no matter what I tried. Eventually I ended up at the Microsoft call centre in Bangalor. From there a true gentleman took control of my PC and eventually concluded that the software on the CD was an OME version and not as per the box.

Who was to blame, Microsoft or Amazon? I will never know. It was just needless frustration. The Microsoft after sales service was fantastic, but I have gone back to my trusted Office 2003.

5 out of 5 stars What a load of rubbish   April 18, 2007

I purchased this software to use with my new Dell laptop: Vista would not load, what for me was the perfectly adequate MS Office 97.

I agree with many of the negative comments made, the system is slow and cumbersome and even with a dual core processor, it takes ages to load. Upsides, not a lot. WHy then 5 stars? Well I have twice now written adverse reports on this software, giving it only one star - the result, Amazon have not published my comments. Just consider how many customers must have purchased this software and only 18 reviews to date. Says a lot.

I have used Amazon for years, but I do think that they are not publishing all of the reviews. Let's see if five stars can get on. I bet it does where 1 doesn't.
