1 out of 5 stars Big mistake   October 28, 2007

Yes there are some nice little add ons in Word but none of these little bonuses make up for the myriad of utterly useless and unnecessary changes to Excel. If this is aimed at the non-user, it just shows the contempt that microsoft have for their existing users (much like X box users).

Call me a luddite but I for one will be un-installing this pathetic piece of software and going back to what was perfectly adequate in the first place.

If you are seriously going to pay that kind of money for M$ Office, i think you either have a brilliant job, with money to burn, or are a fool!

Ok, Office 07 has a shiny new look, they finally removed the annoying assistant, but have also in the process made it more complicated.

If, like me, you transfer documents from one computer to another, then you have got to make sure you save as an 97-03 version, otherwise if you load if on e.g. office 2003 it won't work.

In my opinion, if you have Office 2003 - keep it. Or if you are looking for an office suite, download Open Office.org, or go to the google pack and get Star Office suite for free!!!

4 out of 5 stars The latest Office release, WOW!   October 5, 2007

Microsoft office has a new look, and what a new pretty one it is! When you first open it you might think "woah whats this, and find it hard to use"

I use it 1 every four days at work and i think it looks amazing. Such an elegant design (similar to MACS)

A new useful feature with excel is it is a lot easier to type syntax's as its very helpful in giving the answer! A lot more productive!

One tip is tho the default saving for word can only be opened in office 2007. saving word documents needs to be saved as ".doc"

Great upgrade from Microsoft!

Be warned - this product looks nothing like its predecessors. Whereas all previous incarnations of MS Office have built upon previous editions and it's fairly easy to find your way around - this version will have you pulling your hair out and screaming! The actual functionality is probably very good, but its very hard to find anything as all the menus are new and nothing works in the way it used to.

As a business user I don't really have anything good to say about Office 2007. The new interface now requires 3-4 mouse clicks where 2-3 were needed previously. Many of the keyboard shortcuts no longer work or don't work the way they used to (I don't use the mouse very often). It's not possible to customise the menu structure to any extent as Microsoft have imposed the "ribbon" structure with it's fixed content.

Many of the highlight colours just don't stand out e.g. highlighting text is pink on a white background but highlighted buttons are a sort of yellow colour. There are also only 3 colour schemes available, blue, silver or black. None is particularly attractive and none is particularly clear. Differentiating between several windows often not easy because they are all similar colours.

As a heavy office user, I found the new version of office restrictive and un-instinctive, as if Microsoft have told me how i will work and what commands I will have easily available instead of me being able to select my own. Oh, and you can't even customise a macro button image now! Instead you have to use the ones provided which are an anonymous bunch at best.

you are restricted to a single row of custom buttons - the "quick access toolbar" but if you want the traditional icons on the bar (font, size, style) then you can only fit another 10 or so on the bar - which is restricted to a single line only. when visible, the ribbon occupies a massive amount of space (about 30mm of vertical height) thus restricting the amount of text that can be seen. There appears to be no option to relocate the ribbon, it's always along the top. Hiding the ribbon then needs a double click to bring it back.

I am struggling to express how frustrating I find this software. I am currently in the process of requesting a refund from MS and going back to Office 2003. Note that I can't find anything that 2007 does which 2003 didn't already do for me.
