A little gem of an adventure game November 14, 2008 Just wanted to counter the negative reviews here, as this is an often beautiful and modest game of many hidden charms, and by no means overly frustrating in its gameplay. There are certain very tough sections, specifically the end boss (which does border on the ridiculous) but overall it shouldn't provide too much of a challenge for any seasoned gamer. Whether it will be to everyone's tastes is another matter, it is fundamentally a platformer with many adventure elements such as a strong story, a good deal of exploration and some light RPG elements.
Its charms lie in it's main character, the beautiful Jade, and a refreshingly light approach to the gameplay, which includes photographing rare creatures for extra credits. The world has a quirky charm that could probably only have come from the French, and the locales are beautiful if a little simplistic.
Ultimately, this is a fairly original and charming adventure/platformer which isn't too heavy going or long but will keep any gamer with a little patience entertained and beguiled. Certainly any veteran gamer on the search for overlooked gems will find much to cherish.
Fabulous! September 7, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Beyond Good and Evil is an adventure game with some simple fighting, some great stealth sections and puzzle solving, and a fair amount of (mainly optional) racing in a hovercraft. There's also a lot of photography and you get to fly a space ship! The storyline is simple but engrossing. The graphics aren't cutting edge, but they're perfectly acceptable, and the animation and characterization of the main characters are extremely well done (the secret agent, Double H, was my absolute favourite). The dialogue is relatively sparse, but what there is, is well written. The music and sound effects deserve special mention with very different themes in different areas and appropriate music at emotional moments (of which there are a few).
There are a few issues. The camera occasionally goes crazy, as do the controls, and there are a few points where I had to have multiple tries to progress. On the other hand, I wouldn't class myself as a skilled gamer, nor are my reflexes very fast! The save points are at computers within the actual game. This is a bit irritating if you want to save your game at a given point, but there is a generous checkpoint system. If you die you are respawned very close to your previous point with a sufficient amount of health that you won't be killed again instantly. In fact, the only reasons to save in game are to protect against crashes and if you want to end your playing session. Finally, I did try playing this on a machine with Vista installed, but had problems with the sound and video being out of sync. There may well be a solution to this, but in the end I played it with no problems on an XP machine.
I had a huge amount of fun playing this game. At its current price you can't really go wrong. I've also just heard that Beyond Good and Evil 2 is in the pipeline - I can't wait!
Brilliant and Charming June 25, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this game as it was constantly being recommended by the PC Zone writers.
At first I couldn't understand what the fuss was about, I was going around taking photographs thinking "big deal", but after completing the first mission in the mines and having moved on to the storyline missions I became hooked
There is a bit of everything in this game, racing, combat, adventure, puzzle solving and the main characters (apart from Jade) are both charming and funny
Yes, some of the missions are hard, but I've completed this game 3 or 4 times now and loved it each time.
Highly recommended.
Epitomy of Frustration April 13, 2008 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
Oh I so dearly wanted to like this game I really really did. With the downfall of the Adventure genre almost complete us Adventure gamers have had to look for other forms of entertainment to fill the void...sadly this is not it! When I first started to play the game I thought it was a very charming bright game, ok so I had to kill a few baddies I didn't mind that as long as the narrative was decent I wasn't going to complain, too much. However the novelty soon wore off and I felt as though I was forcing myself to play this game there was nothing really loveable or redeeming about the main character Jade and the Domz are all a bit silly - well ok thats fine Mr Ancel as long as your not going to make the gameplay ridiculously serious...good grief some of the missions in this game are so frustrating its not even funny, the Slaughterhouse race is reasonably fun but then when you get through the secret entrance it becomes insanely difficult to get inside :/ After a dozen or so tries I turned it off...wherein lies the next problem the save system, which is so antiquated you'd expect to see it in an old N64 game or something. Why cant you save anywhere you like? It just frustrates the hell out of everyone when they have to keep going over the same bit to further the story especially in this day and age. I can see why people really like this game but I have to say I'm not a fan of these action/adventure, platformer hybrids they come across as a confusing mess. I've tried it and I dont like it, its the same with Psychonauts, although Psychonauts is slightly better I cant stand the platforming elements and its a real shame that Tim Schafer didn't continue with games of Grim Fandango's ilk because that was a true classic. However if you have bags of patience and can overlook some of the silly flaws(e.g. save system) You will probably enjoy it.
Polished action-adventure December 23, 2006 17 out of 18 found this review helpful
This fantastic little game has been sadly overlooked by many. It's a game that combines stealth, action, RPG elements (buying and selling items) and the use of vehicles (including fun races), with a good simple plot and a main character that is developed throughout the course of the game. The designers here have gone for a "less is more" game, whereby the action is not full on all the time, giving the player a chance to enjoy the scenery and the weird and wonderful characters that inhabit it.
But - and this is the reason it did not receive 5 stars - since it's 3rd person, sometimes the view of the camera can get in the way of the action and so obscure other enemies - not much fun if you're supposed to be in a stealth situation. To be fair this hardly happens but when it does it's annoying.
I like games that slowly tease you in and then give unparalled entertainment. I like the ones that make you feel like you don't know what's going on at first and then by the end when you have full knowledge of the situation, they give you a... well, that would be telling. There were some pumped fists when certain puzzles were taken care of and the designers were aware that some were harder than others, so they give you a little theme tune to show that they appreciate you working them out.
It's one of those games that's just a pleasure to play. To paraphrase Firefly, it's "shiny".
