I bought a new laptop and got Vista Business pre-installed.
It's not OK. Really I think I'd rather have XP. Mostly Vista is just XP but dresses like a tart.
Performance somewhere between OK an sluggish. Which is pretty much how I felt about XP. Vista is a great consumer of resources for little in the way of noticeable benefit. The interface is pretty - but basically the MS desktop reached the height of usability with 95.
Internet Explorer 7 with dynamic security protection, which is immensely irritating, hard to configure and still not a match for FireFox.
Networking: MS Windows 2000 made everything clear, XP made setting up network options more obscure by adding idiot tools (Wizards). Vista has taken catering to morons to a whole new level.
Tool tips - you need them because you are a complete tool - the son of Clippy appears at every opportunity to assure you that MS knows you are an imbecile and Microsoft will slow down your productivity before you hurt yourself. "Are you sure you want to do that.....?"

BitLocker Drive Encryption: possibly the only useful new security feature. Arguably though, better 3rd party tools were / are available for XP.
Conclusion: I'm a bit underwhelmed...

I've now uninstalled Vista from 3 PCs after persistent issues and complaints. The problems we have in our company are as follows:
1. Resource hungry, not suitable for installation on any PC older than 12 months and then only a top spec. Definitely significantly slower than XP even with a nominally faster machine.
2. Serious problems running legacy software i.e. not backwards compatible even with some Microsoft programs! This killed it for us straight away.
3. Hardware compatability issues - basically anything over 2 years old has a 75% chance of being incompatible because of the lack of a driver. This includes digital camers, scanners, printers and faxes.
4. Security issues. Security system is obstructive. Takes multiple clicks and dialogue boxes to do common functions that only took 1-2 clicks before.
5. New file management software universally disliked in our company.
6. Aero interface is pretty to look at but pretty useless to use for any serious work. The semi transparent windows are a useless gimmick and are often indecipherable on an LCD monitor.
7. Incompatible with high resolution displays (we have two monitors at 1920x1200). Vista can't run this resolution.
8. On one machine software crashed every few hours giving the blue screen of death (not seen that since Win 98). Re-installing did not cure the problem - we think this is a BIOS issue.
9. Seems to be geared to media rather than office applications. not much use to our business.
The security might be better than XP but the problems are just too much to cope with for our small business. All three users who tried the software requested to return to XP after less than a week. We made them keep it for a month before asking them again. All still wanted XP back.
From a business point of view, it's difficult to see what this software provides that XP didn't. The experience was WOW for us - Waste of Wonga (money).
I cannot recommend this software as it shows all the signs of being under-developed bloatware. It takes over 30% more disk space than XP.
