4 out of 5 stars Incompatable with Spybot and Lavasoft AD-Aware   January 28, 2008

It's a hit and miss affair choosing internet protection, what one person says works for them doesnt always work for you.
Tried Norton AV in the past but it was a nightmare and I returned it to my local PC shop for a refund.
Success with McAfee since 2004 although installing last years (2007) Internet Security suite was a total pain. As I plan to get an additional laptop this year it was cheaper to purchase the 2008 3 user version, it is also cheaper than getting a year of extra updates from McAfee.
2008 version installed very quickly has an identical interface with a couple of extra bells and whistles added.
Overall McAfee seems to work quietly and efficiently in the background without hogging resources as I had found with Norton. The anti phishing filter seems to work: I found out the hard way last year when I switched it off for a period and got phished!!
One downside with the 2007 and 2008 MIS versions is that there are incompatabilities with some third party anti spyware applications eg Ad- Aware and Spybot. McAfee Installation detected them and I was requested to remove them before continuing the installation. If you plan to install McAfee it might be quicker to uninstall such third party applications first. A list of them can be found on the McAfee support website but you have to hunt around to find it. Try searching the site for 'incompatible third party applications'

4 out of 5 stars No problems encountered...   January 13, 2008

This came pre-installed with my Dell PC running Windows Vista Home Premium about over 4 months ago. So far I have encountered no problems at all. Updates are downloaded promptly and automatically and I feel secure with it on. A good security suite, like a good security man should work unobtrusively in the background but be ready to step in when required.

I have noticed no performance issues and have had no viruses or problems unlike friends of mine running Norton. They find themselves disabling various services to get their PC back up to speed, only to be bombarded with distracting alerts when they do so. What is the point in buying a Firewall if you have to switch it off to work...?

For a normal home user, this suite will be fine and you shouldn't need a hardware solution

My advice to users out there is

1) Keep your protection up-to-date
2) Be very wary of file sharing sites - winmx, limewire etc and of course the more er...colourful sites on the web
3) If a pop-up asks you to install new software, press the "x" (close) button. Do not press "yes" or "no" . This is because "no" does not always mean "no" in the world of hackers and virus writers

If you are unsure about McAfee, check out BullGuard or perhaps Microsoft Live OneCare. I cannot recommend Norton

5 out of 5 stars Hassle-free protection   January 8, 2008

I've used Mcafee for five years or so now and bought this 3 user edition to upgrade the protection on two machines and to install on one new one. After a brief (and painful) flirt with Norton I didn't look anywhere else. Provided previous security software is uninstalled first this product proved to be a breeze. It has loaded onto XP from the CD with no issues and onto Vista via the CD supplemented by the internet link, in a similarly easy fashion. Once installed it updated iteself with no problems and just got on with the job. As far as I am concerned this is a great product which provides brilliant value. I particularly like the 'site advisor' feature which helps you to decide whether to visit a particular site after using a search engine.

4 out of 5 stars More than just anti-virus protection   December 28, 2007

McAfee produce one of the better anti-virus packages on the market, this suite of tools not only includes this great engine but also provides a software firewall and family protection from unwanted content. O.K. that is what they claim but does it work, well in a nutshell yes it does. The software firewall is superior to the basic one supplied by Microsoft but is nowhere near as capable as a correctly configured Hardware firewall. The content filtering is about as effective as they come, but with patience and time spent configuring it; it can be useful.
The biggest benefit it brings is its ease of use; everything is managed via a series of wizards making it quick and simple to configure.

4 out of 5 stars the best I could find   December 6, 2007

I have been using McAfee for long time, got this new one, installed it, and to be honest did not find a big difference from the previous edition, even the interface is quite similar.
I have disabled McAfee's firewall because I had my own application, and the other features are quite useful as well. The good points about McAfee are:
- very easy to set up and install. the default set-up and configurations are quite solid and you do not need to modify any of them if you are a beginner user.
- McAfee is still a lot user friendly in terms of memory and CPU usage than other Security suites. I tried Norton, and my system was struggling.
- I tried Bitdefender, which is also very strong and good, but had lots of trouble because it did not detect windows firewall, and it refused to shut down.
-Mcafee's update is very frequent and useful and all automatically done, so you do not have to do anything.
- system scan is good, of course it takes long time depending on your hard drive size, and what files you need to scan.
- there is a feature that I found very useful, which is that McAfee blocks buffer overflows, and that is very good. this means that you do not have to restart your explorer and lose what you have been doing in case there is a buffer overload of opened applications.

What I do not like is that you have to get used to a lot of warnings whenever an applicaiton tries to modify or do something. That is all good of course, and it is just at the beginning, as the programme will then learn what to do.
This is a good solid security suite, never caused any trouble, and compatibility is never an issue with McAfee. Very easy to install, update and scan files with it. I would have liked a different interface from the previous edition, and would also like the idea of having downloadable DAT upates, which was a great thing McAfee had in the past, where you can update your virus signature database if you did not have internet. Now you have to have internet to be able to update, which is not very convinent for all people.
