Any better than the freeware software? June 26, 2008 2 out of 8 found this review helpful
I have always been a freeware convert, but I took the chance to install this. Instantly felt clunkier and more 'bloated' than other free virus/security products.
On having a look there is a good range of products including anti-spam etc. Other useful extras in McAfee include a home network setup app and a backup program that can schedule regular backups.
However, too much of the product is on extras that you a) don't need, or b) with a bit of research you can get equally as good (if not better) for free. As for me, I will keep for a bit, but first sign of problems, off it will come!
Good Product June 26, 2008 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have been trying out this software, and like most of the anti virus programmes out there, it provides all the necessary things you would come to expect for protecting your computer.
Once installed the program runs silently in the background, and automatically protects you against virus threats and you can program it up automatically updates with latest security threats provided you are connected to the internet.
Its main key features are
Firewall Antivirus and spy ware Parental control
It also is very user friendly, and it is easy to navigate the different menus, and the installation process is very easy to follow. It provides your computer with real time updates via the internet, so you can keep your virus definitions up to date, and also included the option to register with McAfee for updates regarding products and new threats.
Already Proved It's Use June 26, 2008 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
McAfee Internet Security Suite offers a wide-range of security tools, in it's righteous attempt to keep you safe, and worm free on the Internet.
Several other reviewers have mentioned having difficulty in the installation of the package, unfortunately I was the same. While McAfee installed without a hiccup on my laptop with Windows XP, it took three attempts before it installed correctly on my desktop (with Windows Vista). It seemed to be the Spam-killer module which caused the problems as it froze on installation first time around then caused my computer to spontaneously reboot the second time. Also I don't like the Site-Advisor, while I can understand why some users will like it, I found it pretty useless.
But those are my only quibbles with McAfee. Now to the good. I was pleasantly surprised when I ran a full system scan, and McAfee detected several items of malware that were not detected by my previous software - AVG Internet Security Suite. While these items may have been nothing major, it still offers peace of mind knowing that your system is as secure as possible. Mcafee also offers a neat, and well laid out interface, which was easier to navigate than Norton's, or AVG's.
So, despite some problems with the installation. McAfee seems to be a very decent security suite, which gives you all around protection. For the reasons I mentioned, I would definitely recommend McAfee.
Does what it says on the tin but not the best performer out there June 26, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
When I told the IT guy at work that I was going to try McAfee, he just sighed & shook his head. And now I know why.
In terms of its effectiveness in detecting threats, it's of course hard for a user to tell what is really going on behind the scenes. So I had a nose around online & found a comparison chart which showed that McAfee's 91.6% overall detection rate was outperformed by Kaspersky & Symantec, who scored 97.9% & 96.8% respectively. Kaspersky also seems to have many extra features which McAfee does not, as well as significantly more updates & a faster response time to new threats. I guess that's why it has a generally higher price tag.
The lower response time & lower number of updates statistics were especially concerning to me. This is because our IT guy at work told me that, as one of the most widely-used security software packages, many new viruses are specifically designed to be able to get round McAfee. But to be fair, this may be purely anecdotal & is possibly truer of earlier versions than the current one.
Some of McAfee's additional features also don't seem to be particularly effective. I found the SiteAdvisor to be somewhat obtrusive & inneffective, as it constantly flagged up safe websites which I regularly visit. And the Virtual Technician is basically a whitewash to point users towards their FAQ & stop them trying to get hold of a human being when they need support. That's assuming there ARE any human beings in McAfee Support - I've only had automated cut & paste replies to my emails so far.
On the other hand, McAfee does seem to slow my PC's down less than other Internet Security packages do - particularly Kaspersky. However, this is less noticeable on newer PC's & not so dramatic that I would be willing to put up with a lower rate of protection for it.
The only remaining advantage of McAfee over its competition that I can see is that it's generally cheaper - and in my opinion, internet security is an area where I will happily pay a little more for extra protection.
11 in 1 protection June 25, 2008 3 out of 12 found this review helpful
I'm a big fan of AVG, ZoneAlarm and Kaspersky, so when I was asked to give this a go, I was very reluctant: you don't know what you're getting into, or if it's going to really protect you from viruses. After all, 12 years ago when I had McAfee on my PC: I was hit with a virus. It wasn't very easy to remove, so I had to reinstall Windows 3.11.
Anyway - this isn't a bad suite, you get some decent tools here, spyware protection, anti-virus and even a backup system, this is good value for money, especially when you think you can backup 3 PCs, so that's your desktop, laptop and kids machine.
It also has encryption, so if you want to save those accounts safely - then you can use it. It's a very handy feature you don't see in packages like this from Norton or any other for that matter. Usually it's the old PGP route.
This will install on Windows 2000, XP SP1+ and Vista, which is very good if you have an older machine and don't want to go through upgrading to a new operating system to stay safe (I really can't blame people for staying with Windows 2000, it's stable, and probably MS' best OS so far).
The strange thing about this CD is it's just a downstaller really, you do have the software on there, but you download the core onto the system, then depending on which products you have, you will then have those downloaded, it's very modulated, which is quite handy.
You'll be glad to know the interface is pretty clear and easy to use, though it did take a bit of fishing around to find more advanced stuff. The nice thing is it feels like one big package, you don't get that feeling at all with AVG and Zonealarm, feels like you're buying your bread in the bakers then the meat at the butcher, easier to go to the supermarket.
I can't really comment on the efficiency, I don't have a virus - which is a very good thing, but I'm sure as time progresses I won't be sorry I used this package. The firewall seems very responsive and has stopped people trying to ping.
Not a bad package, but I think there's better individual products on the market and even freeware.
