2 out of 5 stars Not a bad suite of programs... if it works for you.   June 24, 2008

On two different PCs, I've had totally different experiences with this software. On one, it was fine (but not without problems). On the other, it was a bit of a nightmare.

Like many others, I quit Norton a few years ago when their software started slowing my computer to the point where it was unusable.

I switched to ZoneAlarm - a superb product, which didn't slow my PC at all - until one of the recent updates.

So I decided to give McAfee a shot. I have very mixed feelings about this product.

First, it does a LOT. Just about anything you could expect or want from a security suite is covered by this software. I won't list all the features here - you can read about them above, or visit McAfee's website.

INSTALLATION.
When you insert the disk, it recommends that rather than installing from CD, you should let it download the latest version from the McAfee site (depending on your version of Windows, this might be the ONLY way you can install it).

On one computer, this worked fine. On the other, repeated attempts failed, and it suggested I allow it to run a diagnostic program to fix things. I did, and the diagnostic program promptly failed and crashed. Not a good start.

It then told me to install from the CD instead. I did, and it downloaded the updates... and instantly gave me a warning message that my PC was not protected. Clicking the 'fix' button produced a pop-up with the helpful message 'Failed because of an error.'

It worked fine after a reboot, but this sort of thing doesn't inspire confidence.

So, on one computer, no problems. On the other, lots.

The next annoyance affects both machines. To keep the program up-to-date with the latest virus definitions, etc. (which is essential), you must have the program activated on-line. On both my machines, a week of attempts have still failed to complete the activation process, always failing for one reason or another.

Again, it doesn't inspire confidence.

Like all security software, McAfee WILL slow down your computer. Both the computers I installed McAfee on are modern, high-spec machines, but the loss in performance is noticable compared to ZoneAlarm. In my experence, this usually seems to get worse over time with security software, as more and more virus definitions etc. are downloaded.

In short, if it works for you, it looks like a pretty good piece of software - I particularly like the way it looks after a home network. Personally, I've found it to be glitchy enough (and slow enough) that I'm probably going to uninstall it and move back to ZoneAlarm.

5 out of 5 stars A good all in one solution   June 23, 2008

Although knowledge of computer viruses and hackers are comparatively widespread in modern times, buying internet security software is still something of a minefield. Of course the sheer variety of nasties that can be encountered is the biggest problem, and any software that you buy must cope with all of it (assuming you do want to take the all in one approach). McAfee Internet Security is one such contender. Boasting 10 major protective measures, McAfee has all bases covered.

Other factors are important too, such as how well it operates without weighing down your system. I would say that this is one of McAfees strong points, having played one or two games without any noticeable slowdown whilst running a full system scan (This is based on a 2 GB PC running Vista Business Edition). There are some features that go beyond the usual intrusion protection measures too, including parental controls, system restore functions, a file shredder for permanently deleting files and a handful of tools for maintaining and boosting computer performance.

With a tidy, easy to understand interface and just about every protection measure you can think of, McAfee Internet Security 2008 is a solid piece of software that does everything you need and more.

Brilliant

First it is easy to install and easy to use. It took little time to install and update, Norton can take an hour to sort it self out.

I having always used Norton virus software, probably because it is the most recognised brand, my PC runs Windows Business Vista and has been running Norton 360.

I now know that Norton made the PC run very slow and I found I was refreshing pages it would not upload. I also use a web best picture upload and I was always struggling to get them to upload, I had put all this down to poor Broadband or something.

Having installed Mcfee It is like having a new PC, speed is back to normal, I have not refreshed a page as every page loads.
What Mcfee has done is shown how poor 360 was, Mcfee is packed with features but as long as it protects my PC I don't think many of them will be used.

Would I recommend?, yes absolutely, it is a software that works in the back ground and doesn't effect the PC performance.

4 out of 5 stars McAfee Internet Security Suite good if personally configured   June 23, 2008

I was a Norton user but after repeated issues with Norton (including 360) I decided to move to McAfee after reading positive reports on it. Knowing there is no magic bullet in the security software market I have installed McAfee and personally configured it to meet my needs with additional personal software.

I have customized the email handling and file handing to avoid system delays. I have also installed Ad-Aware 2007 as no single Malware offering can offer 100% protection and the two sit happily together offering the protection I desire.

I am kept up to date with regular updates from central McAfee and with some pre mentioned personal configuration I have an effective offering at my finger tips.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent , user friendly   June 22, 2008

I used this to replace a Norton product and it was very easy to install. Even when Norton did not want to de-install the McAfee program showed me where to get a proper de-installer program. Installation was simplicity itself, with it picking up my existing settings for Firefox and Thunderbird. It has also picked up already a number of Adware programmes than my 2005 version of Norton did not - and took them off the machine as well.
I really like the Control Centre approach with anti-virus, parental control and personal firewall in a single place.
Long term not sure (Norton was very good at running unobtrusively) obviously so I'll come back to this in a few months - but ease of installation and getting going - a really good piece of end user software
