Get the Demo First or you'll regret it. February 1, 2008 12 out of 14 found this review helpful
Right well I did a review of the last version of this software and my complaint was that it used a hell of a lot of processor power. You may remember me saying it makes the CPU sound like a helicopter? Nothing changes in this version. I've just read some reviews on Amazon and decided I'll try the demo from Corel to see if they've sorted out the problems that many were mentioning in the last version. They haven't so unless you've got a really high spec PC. Mine is a 3.2 GHZ Pentium 4 with 2GB of RAM, Probably needs Windows Vista as well but I'm no way going on to that so don't get me started. I'm sticking with Photoshop CS2 it's beautiful and I can use it as easily as I used to be able to use PSP. That was until Corel got their programmers on it.
Very Impressive January 30, 2008 20 out of 22 found this review helpful
I bought a new computer just after Christmas running Vista so a lot of my old programs won't run properly on it, and my old copy of Paint Shop Pro 6 was one of these.
I do a lot of digital photography and considered Photoshop, Lightroom and Paint Shop Pro X2. I downloaded trial versions and gave them a good going over for the 30 days free period that they came with.
To cut a long story short I couldn't justify the money on the full Photoshop, especially as there are so many new features in X2 that match Photoshop (perspective correction and HDR to name but two) and Lightroom seemed a very basic package compared to X2. X2 is very easy to use and carries over the general method of operation from previous versions.
So why have I given it only 4 stars? Running on Vista it is slightly buggy and occasionally crashes during the middle of a command, although it is not very often, happening once or twice a week. Maybe XP is better and Vista is the culprit.
I think X2 is the first version I've used that I can really say can compete with some of the best editing programs out there, and once the price is factored in it is unbeatable.
But, if you're in any doubt just download the free trial programs and run them back-to-back and see for yourself.
PSP X2 Install January 3, 2008 16 out of 17 found this review helpful
I Bought Paint Shop Pro X2 for my girlfriend for Christmas I went to install and the problems began. The install went through to the last segment and just stalled no error message nothing. Many attempts later having cleaned the registry manually then finding a tool on the Corel site for cleaning, still didn't work.
Phone support and they said would email some tips and software for a better registry clean, no email received. Started reading through the Corel site and found a possible requirement to update graphics drivers. With more reading seemed to hint at problems running on systems with dual core processors which were not running latest graphics drivers.
My girlfriends system is dual core and only six months old but I went and found the latest nVidia6100 drivers and loaded them. Bingo, install completed and working fine.
It took me about three hours in the end and I work in IT. I really can't recommend this product to anyone who has not got a good IT background.
Maybe not Corels fault it did not work but certainly there fault that no proper error message was returned and that their web site did not give clear and easy method of fixing.
A lightweight easy to use alternative to Photoshop. December 30, 2007 85 out of 90 found this review helpful
As a software developer working mainly with web technologies, I have to constantly manage and manipulate images. This is a task I am hopeless at I can crop and resize images but anything else and I find it almost impossible. I have a full copy of Adobe Photoshop CS3 yet find the program totally bewildering; I have completed several courses on using it but to no avail. Image manipulation is completely different skill to software development, requiring a different mindset. After struggling a friend suggested I try PaintShop Pro, as it was a lightweight image manipulation package designed to make tasks easy. So I downloaded the trial version and started to give it a try; after about an hour I ordered the full version. It is so easy to use and create the effects my clients so often want. The ability to apply effects and create what I considered complex tasks in Photoshop was an absolute doddle in Paintshop Pro. Adding a drop shadow effect is just a few clicks as is creating a reflection. For the price this is a superb application and should form part of any developer's toolbox.

Corel is a master at making perfectly good software disappear. I degraded back to PSP 9.0 ever since Corel took over. From a lean and mean graphics package PSP first became a sluggish Photoshop clone (version 10) and now something you get for free with every digital camera.
