Don't Believe The Hype June 12, 2008 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
I bought Acronis True Image 11 as it is consistently rated as the best of breed backup product in the various PC specialist press and websites. However my experience with the product has been very different.
I have no knowledge of previous versions of the product and anecdotal evidence from various forums suggests that they were indeed very good. However this latest version 11 (build 8053) is not. Having bought the product I now find that I cannot even perform a successful backup of a selection of data files. The product just hangs without ever displaying an error.
Acronis technical support is the worst I have ever come across. Two weeks after filling out the online form requesting support I have had nothing but an automated response. After trying to find alternative help on the web I came across the official Acronis True Image Product Line forum on the Wilders Security website. On there are other posters with the identical problem to mine which has been acknowledged by Acronis and been unresolved for 6 months now. Have a look at it. There you'll find many, many examples of apalling technical support, crippling bugs in version 11 and unhappy customers.
I wish that I'd looked at it before purchasing.
Good so far May 19, 2008 0 out of 6 found this review helpful
Seems good, have not yet had to restore with it (hence 4*), but flawless and easy so far.
Already proved its worth May 18, 2008 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I bought a copy of Acronis True Image 11 from Amazon together with a 500GB external hard disk to constitute my first image-based backup system. In the past I've always taken backups by copying my documents onto DVD, just in case I had to reinstall windows. Although this does prevent most loss, restoration was a time-consuming process especially with the number and size of programs I tend to have installed these days. The image-based backup bypasses this, allowing the system to simply be reverted to a previous state in a single, all-encompassing process.
After owning the product for only 3 days (and thankfully taken my first backup), a catastrophic display driver failure left me with a semi-functional windows installation and needing to roll back whatever had gone wrong. Acronis to the rescue. The bootable CD loaded the PC straight into the recovery console and the program guided me through the steps of restoring the image to the hard disk - even sorting out the drive letters to correspond to their original configuration.
The recovery process was fairly time-consuming at about 3 hours, but could be left completely unattended during the process and certainly compared well to the three days or so of constant attention it would have taken to manually reinstall windows and all my programs. And of course this restoration produced a perfect replication of the way my system had been when the backup was taken. Overall I'm very impressed so far and would have no problem recommending this product.

I used Acronie True Image 10 for almost a year (my husband is using it now on a geriatric PC running Windows XP Pro) before I upgraded to Acronis 11 with XP Pro & Office Pro on my newish desk top. No, not Vista yet! Everthing runs smoothly to our chosen schedules and is backed up to an external hard drive. I had early issues with running out of space despite setting the required allocation for one Full back up followed by 6 Differentials, according to the manual which I downloaded in full. Why not give their Tech Help a phone call as I did, to get the space allocation sorted. At 1p. a minute to the USA its hardly a big deal! Both work flawlessly for both of us, and sends emails to confirm the backups have been successful or not, whichever is the case. But for that, I would give it the full 5 stars. The message is RTFM!! You can even do a try out with v.11, so what is the fuss!
Unreliable April 16, 2008 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
I bought this product a few weeks ago and although installation was OK I wish I had never bothered. I'm using it with Vista and backing up to a NAS drive. Most files backup without problems but it fails with Outlook data files. I bought backup software for piece of mind. Reliability is paramount. My Outlook data files are in the order of 100Mb, the backup file is 50Kb and is missing all info apart from the file structure. I have tried re-installation. I have tried full and incremental backups. I have contacted Acronis 3 times and have not had a reply to any of my messages. I'm now using a 60-day free trial of Norton Ghost (available from Symantec US not UK) which seems to be working reliably. Acronis is also available as a free trial download. I would suggest you try that first before spending money. I would accept the bug if Acronis appeared to care but given their lack of reply I'm loosing patience.
