1 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy   April 13, 2008

I wish I had never heard the name Acronis, in numerous magazines and customer reviews it is reported as an excellent piece of software. In theory it looks to be so it backs up according to a schedule, controls the number of backups you want to keep, etc.
I am running it under Windows Vista Ultimate and the problem is the software is completely unreliable. I have found that the scheduled tasks do not run to completion they hang, it does not delete old no longer required backups, and it doesn't report problems unless you investigate it yourself.
My impression is that this software has been designed for professional use and without any thought put on to the home market. As an example Acronis support keeps telling me to uninstall and reinstall, a job that takes a long time as it means you have to go in and delete register entries. Not something I would recommend for ordinary home users.
How it gets its reputation I do not know, but I am going to consign my copy to the place it belongs, the dustbin

5 out of 5 stars My Safety Net!   February 13, 2008

I'm truly amazed at all the poor reviews and problems! I've used several versions of True Image over the years, though admittedly only on XP, after migrating from a problem-ridden Norton Ghost setup.

I currently run True Image Workstation, performing monthly backup images onto a spare hard-drive (rather pointless putting it on the main drive and there's added safety in case of total drive failures). Reckless and daring behaviour has necessitated recovering my active partion on several occassions.

I've never had the slightest glitch with any of the versions I've used so maybe this is a current problem related to adapting it to run on Vista. A problem there certainly appears to be - I can't believe this number of people are all 'mis-understanding' it in some way (it's always been fairly intuitive). I sincerely hope Acronis sort it out because I regularly recommend it and continue to rate it as a first-class product.

2 out of 5 stars Good when it works   February 6, 2008

I've been playing about with True Image 11 as it has a lot of features I want such as automatic keeping X backups, deleting the older ones, performing a new full backup after so many incrementals / differentials, etc. I've not had any problems with restoration, but I've had tons of problems with the UI locking up when trying to set up new backup jobs or change the settings of existing ones.
The latest of these problems is every time I go to the "Manage Backup Locations" screen, in an attempt to adjust quotas, the whole thing locks up and has to be terminated. Exactly what it is trying to do I don't know as I can see the backup location fine in Explorer but want to get to that screen in order to create a new one! I've also experienced a lot of random hangs in the various wizards such as when creating a new scheduled tasks. It's a shame, if the bugs were sorted out this would definitely be 5 stars from me.

1 out of 5 stars Use this software and loose your data   January 28, 2008

Sam "msaa500" (York, UK) has many 5star ratings, too many. Listen to everyone else and don't buy this product, it is truly awful. Come on Amazon what are you still selling this product for?

3 out of 5 stars Vista Warning   January 18, 2008

True Image 11 is a very good piece of software. It performs perfectly in Windows Xp Pro.
However in Vista there are two problems that are not mentioned in the Manufacturer's information; these are:
1) Dynamic disks are not supported; disks of this type will not show in True Image's drive windows. The only way around it is to save the drive's data, delete the volume and then convert to Basic disk. These operations are performed within Windows 'Disk Management'. The Basic disk is then formatted and then reloaded.
2) Vista supports two types of partition table, MBR (the old master boot record) and GUID (or GPT). True Image 11 WILL ONLY SUPPORT MBR so any disk that uses GUID must have its volume(s) deleted and then set up with MBR partition.
Acronis inform me that there is no simple workaround.
