5 out of 5 stars More than it's appearance   May 31, 2006

OK, I admit it's a melodramatic, cheesy film; but that's not all there is to it. As the protagonist Scarlett grows older, she changes and everytime she marries it is for a different reason. At first it's jealousy, then it's for they money and finally she marries because she thinks they make a good match. When she finally realises she doesn't love Ashley, it's too late. It's a love movie, but it's not just about love, or "if two people love each other then everything's fine", it recognises that there are other people and other morals and issues surrounding us that make and break a relationship. OK, is Scarlett evil? She uses people, but she's fiesty and she knows what she wants and does everything to get it, but she's not evil nor completely good. THe ending also suggests that the history behind each of us is not something you can just put down as easily as we pick it up.

1 out of 5 stars worse movie ever made??   October 14, 2005

Isn`t it strange that a terrible movie made light years ago still has the hypnotic influence to convince viewers that they are in fact watching a classic.Ok so go back to when it was made and colour, scenes, set pieces were not tooo bad.Except one scene I remember when Ashley is walking back to Tara, you can see the cloth backdrop moving--how gross. Its far too long, its corny acting, the sets when watched now are worse than the kids at schools Christmas panto, storybook is excellent to read but movie is so so bad.

4 out of 5 stars Wasn't sure to expect...but its a good view!   December 13, 2004

Four hours?! Made 65 years ago?! A love story?! These are the factors that have always prevented me from watching this movie, but I did watch it recently as part of a film course. I have to say that it was much better than I thought it would be - it is an unashamed melodrama, and there are glaring historical inaccuracies, but its enjoyable because of Scarlett - she's not your average romantic posy - she has an edge, and hardly any redeeming qualities except for a fab wardrobe maybe, but at the same time this is what makes her rather intriguing! I think it is one of those movies you just have to watch so you can make up your own mind!

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece!!   October 27, 2004

My mum first told me of this film when i was about to buy some dvds from amazon. she told me all the characters and how i would like it if i brought it. so i ordered it and when i got it, i watched it and i've never seen a well-made film of 1939 in my life. i loved vivian leigh and her famous 'fiddle-dee-dee' quote. i also loved olivia de hallivand as the caring, loving melanie hamilton. If you ever are thinking of buying this film heres two words of advice, BUY IT!!. You won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Sound slightly disappointing; pity no special features   June 20, 2004

Enough has been said about the movie itself by others. (Slightly too long for my taste, though.) Although the sound is 5.1 DD, it's not remixed much and uses the centre speaker heavily, which I found annoying now and then. Pity also that the producers didn't release this movie with lots of special features immediately ... there must surely be a wealth of material available.
