5 out of 5 stars The Best Anne Elliot ever.   January 12, 2008
Ann Firbank is superb as Anne Elliot, she truly embodies the essence of the character. Not only that, all the supporting characters are spot on too. Yes, the 70s hairdo's and costumes are pretty appalling, but you soon get used to them. Some of the scenes between the two leads are genuinely touching and bring a tear to the eye. Insane that this production is available on digitally remastered dvd's in the States (Region 1) but not in the UK!!!!
Incidentally, I saw Ann Firbank on stage a couple of weeks ago in 'An Ideal Husband', in which she played the character of Lady Markby. She must be in her seventies now, but she is still recognisably herself, and still with the same lovely expressive contralto voice, which she had no trouble projecting! She got some of the loudest laughs from the audience, and the warmest applause. Treat yourself to this videotape ... you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Anne Firbank is the best Anne Elliott   August 27, 2007

I saw this film many years ago and despite the fact that the Captain Wentworth in this was not my idea of a dashing captain (Rupert Penry-Jones is far better!), it has always been my favourite Jane Austen adaptation...until Pride & Prejudice with Colin Firth.

I first saw this adaptation some years back and I didn't much like it - perhaps I couldn't see past the bouffant hair dos and the notorious green plaid dress? Now it's one of my favourite things to watch!

I grant you that the 1995 Root/Hinds version is great viewing, but the greater length of this adaptation allows more of the story to be included, and the proper explanation for Mr Elliot's actions. If Lousia here is a little too silly in comparison, the portrayal of Elizabeth Eliott is infinetly superior. I can't really fault any of the performances, to be honest, and Mrs Clay is as handsome and insinuating as she should be.

The last few romantic scenes are enough to warm your heart and perhaps bring a tear to your eye. Ann Firbank has the steady firmness of the older Anne Elliot and Bryan Marshall is spot on as Captain Wentworth.

I hope you are now persuaded that this will be a valuable addition to your video collection!

4 out of 5 stars Romantic, humourous, close to Austen's original story   April 13, 2000

For a Jane Austen fan -- this video is a gem and will hold pride of place on the library shelf. This version of Persuasion holds true to Jane Austen's work. There are various sub-texts of Regency society and its expectation of how people should behave, and Austen's view of how the confining bonds of 19th century England can stifle women's expression and movement. The script follows close to Austen's storyline -- and because of the interior monologue of the main character Anne Elliot, scriptwriter Julian Mitchell cleverly turns many passages of Anne's interior thoughts into dialog. The actors acquit themselves with distinction. You can't go wrong with buying this one!
