The Best Period Drama Ever March 30, 2000 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This video is perfect in every respect: casting, costumes, choice of locations, music, faithfulness to the original novel - even the grammar of the dialog is true to the novel and the period. The video doesn't really cover the last chapter, but this is no real detriment to the production, and leaves you with a little bonus when you read book!Of course P&P is generally acknowledged as Jane Austen's finest work. It combines romance, drama and wry humour in perfect balance and provides a fascinating insight into life among the British gentry and aristocracy in the late 18th century. The sheer authenticity alone makes this video a joy to watch over and over (we have worn out two sets of tapes already!), or you can simply dip into your favourite scenes when you have the odd hour to spare. This is the definitive production of P&P and has set the standard for other Jane Austin productions which followed shortly after (check out Emma Thompson's Sense and Sensibility).
My all-time favorite movie, the only video I own. March 9, 2000 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This movie was wonderfully cast, and was brilliantly acted. It had a great score and terrific scenes. If you are a Jane Austen fan, you won't be disappointed in this "interpretation" of her book. I have watched it over and over again. I cant get enough.
Excellent Period Drama March 8, 2000 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This has to be one of the best period pieces ever made. It is one of the few movies that I found faithful to the original story. Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth are supurbly cast as Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy. The scenery is spectacular (although the grand estate of Pemberly doesn't actually exist. The exteriors of the house belong to Lyme Park and the interiors belong to Sudbury House.) and when Colin Firth emerges from the lake in THAT scene, it is a heartstopper. This is an essential for your home video collection.
