Everybody loves Darcy August 22, 2004 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Pride and Prejudice has been my favorite novel since I was a girl, and I loved the earlier filmed version, so it was with some trepidation that I watched this televised adaptation. I needn't have worried. All memories of Sir Laurence Olivier and Greer Garson fled as soon as Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle appeared onscreen. Ehle made a very credible Elizabeth Bennet, and Firth was simply -- well, I defy anyone to watch him looking at Elizabeth across the room while she is playing the piano without feeling the chemistry and attraction that drive him to her. Impeccable production values, careful attention to getting everything just right, from appropriate dance steps to the instrumentalists who play at different venues, from the fabrics of the women's clothes to the food on the tables, all these factors contribute to this fine film. If you like Jane Austen and historical drama, I urge you to visit Hertfordshire with Darcy and Bingley and meet the memorable Bennet family at home. This is a production you will want to see again and again.
Brilliant but flawed July 17, 2004 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I recently bought this DVD version of Austin's brilliant book and although I thought it was brilliantly done I could not help thinking that, given the BBC's excellent record for bringing classics to life, it would have been better if, when transferring to DVD they had edited out the beginning & end titles for each episode to make the story continuous and this DCD more enjoyable. I found the numerous interuptions "exteremely vexing".
SUPERB FILM EVER! June 13, 2004 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
i'm 14 years old and i first watched this when i was 12. my grandma owned the vhs version and i used to always watch it when i went down her house, that's what i always looked forward to the most. you are probably thinking how a 12 year old can like costume dramas and understand the language but i didn't understand the language but i understood most of it and i loved it to bits.i had to always ask my dad what all the words meant but i loved the film too much so i didn't pay attention to the dialoge, only the costume because i loved the clothes in this time and i used to always dance to all the waltzs and foxtrots and i got them all in my head and i became obsessed. All the cast played the characters so well, i loved mr darcy, the body language said it all and the work by colin firth was fantastic. Lizzy, well i always wanted to be like lizzy and be energetic and walk up the hills in a dress! all the other characters like Mr Bennett who was humors in some parts. everyone BUY THIS FILM because even though it's old fashioned, it is one the best films ever made!
Amazing! May 24, 2004 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
A truely wonderful adaption of Jane Austens all time favourite classic. Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth take on the roles of Miss Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy amazingly. They are supported by the fantstic Adele Steadman playing Mrs Bennet and the strong acting of Crispin Bonham Carter playing Mr Bingley. It is a must for all even if classics are not your fortay. A really amazing five hour adaptation which you will watch time and time again without getting board. WONDERFUL!
