5 out of 5 stars BEST CHILDRENS READ THIS YEAR   February 22, 2008
This book reminded me of how much joy you can have when reading to your kids. The scary bits really captivate and you find yourself reading faster just to see what happens! Love it.

4 out of 5 stars A lonely spook and some pointy shoes   February 1, 2008
The Spooks Apprentice is an adventure/fantasy story.

This book is about a boy named Thomas Ward, who is training to be a Spook. Everything is going smoothly until Tom meets a girl with pointy shoes. After that there are some disappearances. Could they be connected with Mother Malkin , the most evil witch in the county?

The two main characters are the Spook and Thomas. The Spook is a lonely, rugged and wise person ,while Thomas is a curious and brave person.

My favourite character is the Spook because he is a very wise and strong character.

The reason I like this book is because it is very gripping, and also because it is quite surprising because sometimes when you think someone's
bad it turns out they are good after all.

I would recommend this book for ages 8 and up. I also think this book is better for boys than girls.

4 out of 5 stars Foolish me!   January 27, 2008

The story starts on a cold, dark November night and finishes back in Chipenden but the sun is getting warmer, the bluebells are out and the birds are singing (and the spook is regaining his strength really well) so it ends happily ever after. Alice, the spooks apprentice, is happy, where as at the start she wasn't so cheerful but rather freezing and glum in the winter house of the Spook. This story is really frightening at parts but others are not so bad. It says on the back not to read after dark but I did and I had nightmares (about the story). Recommendation: this book I would say is for really brave boys (and tomboys) who are aged 9 - 15.
