Sir Peter Scott's Apprentice November 3, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Colin Willock's cherished biography of Mackenzie Thorpe preserves, forever, the life of a man who may well have been barely literate.
Set near the saltmarshes of The Wash in south Lincolnshire, we follow the progress of 'Kenzie's life from that of a maturing juvenile delinquent poacher, through his employment by Sir Peter Scott as first keeper of his sacred collection of rare wildfowl at the Lighthouse, to his eventual establishment - by popular and well founded request - as a revered and respected wildfowling guide on the marshes and dykes that he had spent a lifetime understandng.
We join Father Colin and 'Kenzie in the confessional, as Kenzie discloses frankly and honestly his recollection of his time as a poacher, a jobbing zoo-keeper for Peter Scott, and finally (like Frank Sawyer) a widely renowned expert in his chosen field.
Emulating his master, though not in bronze at Slimbridge or The London Wetlands Centre, 'Kenzie even took up the brush and began to sketch the wildfowl to which his life was quite accidentally dedicated. Some of his drawings are reproduced in this book.
Often on the wrong side of the law, 'Kenzie nevertheless carries with him a sense of what is exciting and primitive about the pursuit of meat for the table.
Colin Willock captures in this book what we would never otherwise get to learn, save we had actually met and won the confidence of this quiet, highly skilled and knowledgable man.
